First off...I'm kinda confused. You are now asking about a BSOD CURRENTLY on your pc??

For the HDD swap you CANNOT do that and expect it to work as drivers and hardware will be different. Also that violates the MS EULA for using a licensed version if windows, because the hdds have licensed versions of Windows good ONLY in the laptop it came in.

    Hi Drew,
Yes, BSOD is original and current problem with laptop I'm trying to boot.
Appreciate what you say about swapping not expected to work...but it was just a test to see what would happen.
Obviously, original HD back in Toshiba now, and still trying to get it to boot.
What puzzles me though is that it's HD actually DID boot in my laptop. And mine in his..
What I don't understand is if it were a hardware problem in Toshiba, why would it boot using another HD. And if a software problem, why would his HD boot my laptop.
    Chaz

Ok then can you provide the current BSOD details? Like the STOP code?

Ok research on that code.... (I'm sry I must've missed it in first post) has given me reason to think you might have a boot sector VIRUS. For that reason I'm going to ask that the TechGuy mods move this to the malware forum.

CharlesDC1, if the moderators decide to move this post to the malware forum only mods, trusted advisors, and malware specialists can provide you with assistance there. So good luck as if it turns out to be a virus in the boot sector its outta my knowledge anyhow :)

I don't understand why your first post is an attachment of an image. Where did you copy it from?

Hi there! I wrote it out to post elsewhere but got no reply. Took screenshot of my own message because I couldn't face writing it all again. Just lazy I suppose!

I saw your post at Tom's Hardware. In the future please copy and paste. The reason being is that it makes it more difficult for us to help as we cannot copy and paste anything from what you've written to do research so we have to type it all out.

So, having gotten that out of the way, yes malware is a possibility but not the only one. I suspect something more along the lines of a driver issue. Had your friend just done any updates prior to this happening?

If there is an option in the Bios to set the HDD mode to Legacy/IDE/Pata try setting it that way, or change it to AHCI if it's already set to Legacy ... then see if it will boot into Windows.
