Hi, after 5 yrs of having my touchpad not working (which was fine with me, i don't like touchpads), it suddenly came on yesterday and won't turn off even when I disable it. The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite. I didn't download anything nor change any drivers yesterday and I have no clue what to do next. I suspect I'll need to disable a driver, but I don't know how to know which driver it is nor how to disable it once found. Thanks very much for any/all help.
sorry, i was halfway through your first reply when the doorbell rang and I assumed wrongly i had gotten the idea of the message and then quickly replied. Sorry.
I have now tried the control panel method (which was my first attempt before visiting this site) and the keyboard technique several times each. The touchpad still works like a charm.
You may not be able to disable the touchpad. I have an asus netbook that has settings to disable the touchpad however after disabling the touchpad, it still works. Sometimes they just will not disable.
You might check the laptop mfg's site to see if there are any bios updates that address this issue. If so, an update may fix the issue. Do be sure you fully understand the flashing procedure before attempting this task.
If you have an external mouse attached to your toshiba, there should be a setting in the Mouse properties in control panel to set Disable Touchpad if Mouse is Present.

My netbook has that setting to disable touchpad if an external mouse is detected. Still never works. I tried a few times to fix it and after a while just gave up and put up with the touchpad still being active.
I just hate that when typing I sometimes drag my thumb or whatever over the touchpad. All of a sudden I am typing in a different part of the doc
I have two Toshiba Laptops and a Dell Inspiron and I do not have a problem with the touch pad settings, How ever on my Daughters Acer One I can not disable the touch pad. (But I don't expect too much from a Netbook anyway)
I remember my first touchpad, it plugged into the mouse port of my desktop computer. Of course that was back in Dos days. and it was called a cursor controller. I loved it at the time, but now I dislike touchpads.
Yeah, it seems to have decided to go permanently on. Maybe I'll try taping something over it or i'll just try very hard to keep my hands away from it when typing. Thanks to everyone for all help offered
Hate touchpads. Old school and too sensitive to accidental touching. I have Acer Aspire lappy and installed
Synaptics Touchpad V7.2. In Mouse properties under pointing devices the option to disable is there.
Now the pad works when Windows is booting but after boot the pad is dead as a doornail. Great for me.
Good luck. This is what worked for me and may not fit everyone else.
