Cannot get rid of item 20 from HJT log, "Winlogon Notify: TPSvc - TPSvc.dll (File missing)". I press the "Fix button and it disapears but comes back when the PC is rebooted. The PC appears to be working fine with no noticable problems.

You didn't mention which version of HiJackThis you're using.

Some log entries, such as the O23 entries, can't be removed with HiJackThis.

I'm new here and I'm taking time to figure out how to use the site. Please forgive me if I make errors. I'm not even sure if the missing file mentioned in item 20 is a real problem but there appears a lot of info about it on the web. The more I read about it the more confused I get. But to answer your question I'm using version 2.0.4 of HJT.

I don't advise you to fix log entries with HiJackThis 2.0.4, unless you really know what you're doing.

-------------------------------------------------------

If you want us to examine your log, start HiJackThis and then click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

Save the log that appears, then copy-and-paste the entire log here.

Let's see what needs to be uninstalled, updated, replaced, or added in that computer.

Start HiJackThis, but don't run a scan.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere.

It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

------------------------------------------------------

You need to avoid cleaner/optimizer/booster/tuneup programs like the plague before you wind up trashing your computer with them.

They do nothing to improve speed and performance, but what they can do is damage Windows and break programs.

The following can be uninstalled because they're not needed or are dangerous to use:

Advanced System Optimizer

Driver Sweeper

FrostWire

Spybot - Search & Destroy

STOPzilla

Windows Search

-------------------------------------------------------------

Java(TM) 6 Update 27 needs to be updated to Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0.29(6 Update 29)

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free 1.51.2.1300 needs to be installed.

SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition 5.0.0.1134 needs to be installed.

I deleted all except Stopzilla at this time. During a recent contact with Symantic for a Norton 360 problem they wanted me to remove malwarebytes and I did. I just purched Stopzilla a few weeks ago and hate to throw good money away. Can I leave Stopzilla instead of using Malwarebytes?
Also there is a newer version of the Jave available 1.7.0.1 should I download that instead? Do I need the additional Super spyware?

If you bought and want to keep STOPzilla, that's fine.

If you want to install Java Runtime Environment 7 Update 1, that's fine.
Its install won't overwrite and replace Java(TM) 6 Update 27 because it's a different version, so you'll need to uninstall it.

Since you're obviously a gamer, you might want to update the NVIDIA graphics driver.
285.58 for Windows XP was released a couple of days ago.

SUPERAntiSpyware is good at detecting "adware tracking cookies" and other problems, so I would install it, update its definition files, then run a quick scan, then remove what it finds.

I tried updating the Nvidia drivers many times in the last 2 years with newer ones but they don't work good. I'll try the last 2 or 3 and see if they are any better. The last good one I updated with is 196.21 and I have that saved. I'll download the Superspyware. What about the TPSvc missing file, item 20, from HJT issue, do I have to do anything about that?

That's funny. Your uninstall_list.txt log shows the previous version 280.26 installed.

I wouldn't worry about the O20 log entry at this point. It's associated with VMware.

OK everything is done. I removed Java and downloaded the latest version 1.7.0.1. I also ran a Superantispyware scan and found 2 items needing fixing and I will investigate my Nvidea driver updates. Somehow one of the driver updaters updated it and now I know why some of the functions aren't working properly. Also I ran another HJT scan (which see) and I have a return of the "about:blank" virus see item R0 of the scan. I tried removing it a few times in the past few weeks and I thought successfully but it keeps returning. Can you help get rid of it permanently?

George

Click Start - Run, then type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - "Startup" tab.

Write down the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark.

If the entire name of any of them can't be seen, widen the column.

Submit those names here in a vertical list.

Make sure to spell them exactly as you see them there.

The startup load in that computer needs trimming down, so we'll work on that next.

I'm going off-line for a few hours, so I'll check back here later.

Whenever I update the NVIDIA graphics driver, I only install the graphics driver. I don't select and install all the other features.

I'm not a gamer like you are, so there may be more features that you need than I do.
