Transferring Files from Hard Drive to Laptop

My old desktop power supply went out again so I called it quits. Plugged in my external hard drive to my laptop and it read it, but no files are there. Not sure why. Fine, removed the actual desktop hard drive and bought an SATA to USB adapter. My laptop also read this HD, properties say it is half full with files, but again, I can't see where the files are. Just shows programs files, and folders that amount to a few hundred KB even though properties shows hard drive is half full. Could it be my laptop? The laptop I have has Windows 10 Education. The files on my old desktop hard drive are Windows 7 and 10. I can't find this same issue anywhere on youtube.

Download a Linux LiveCD iso, like Ubutnu, and right click the iso to burn disk image ot DVD. Then boot with it and it can read the Desktop hard drive. Copy the files off to a USB memory stick.

Remember you have 2 partitions on the desktop hard drive, one for Win 7 and one for Win 10. So copy off files from both.
