basically, i want to know how i can get my icon labels to be transparent, so that my background will show thru. So the words will be there, but the black box behind them will not. (XP system)

    thanks

    # On the Desktop, right-click on My Computer, then click Properties.
    # In the System Properties dialog, click the Advanced tab.
    # Under Performance, click Settings.
    # On the Visual Effects tab, make sure Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop is selected.
    # Click Ok, then click Ok again.

If what MFDnSC suggested doesn't fix the problem, then also turn off Active Desktop.

Right click your desktop => properties => desktop tab => customize desktop => Web Tab

Make sure everything listed here is unchecked.
