Hi. I hope someone can help me with this one. I should add that the Trojan isn't on my pc - it's on my niece's laptop. She lives a few hundred miles away from me, so I don't have access to her computer. The Trojan’s presence was revealed by a Norton alert, as follows:

Scan type: Realtime Protection Scan
Event: Virus Found!
Virus name: Trojan Horse
File: C:\WINDOWS\__p9hEPQkbj.exe
Location: Quarantine
Computer: ********-******
User: Administrator
Action taken: Quarantine succeeded : Access denied
Date found: 24 December 2005 21:21:13

Whether left in Norton's Quarantine or deleted from there, it regenerates itself. I don't know how often it does so, but my niece has had this alert 3 times in the same day on one occasion (her computer access is ad-hoc, when her parents give her permission) and this alert has been appearing at least once a day for about a fortnight now. She maintains that the only download she's installed was a Windows Media Player update from Microsoft, and that she hasn't accepted any files from friends on MSN or visited any sites online other than her usual diet of message boards & forums.

A Google search found __p9hEPQkbj.exe mentioned in relation to Vundo. Symantec's removal tool found nothing untoward, and a search found nothing listed on their site as far as this particular .exe is concerned, either. Here's the Hijack This log:

In lieu of a fuller reply by the experts - download this 14 day free trial. Update the definitions and run the programme (setting to only checking known folders in the options is much quicker if you have lots of files) and fix/delete anything it finds. I had vundo and this is the only programme that worked for me.

You should also switch off System Restore to clear old start points that may be corrupted then reset it on again after a reboot. This will create a fresh clean Restore point. You can check how to do this using Help (Start/Help and Support). Clearing temp files and internet cache would also be a good idea.

Time for Xmas dinner - hope this helps.

Hi and welcome to TSG,

Please move HijackThis out of the Temporary files, into a separate folder of its own in program files, so that it can function properly and create back-ups which can be restored, if necessary and then post a new log.

Download Cleanup from Here
  • A window will open and choose SAVE, then DESKTOP as the destination.
  • On your Desktop, click on Cleanup40.exe icon.
  • Then, click RUN and place a checkmark beside "I Agree"
  • Then click NEXT followed by START and OK.
  • A window will appear with many choices, keep all the defaults as set when the Slide Bar to the left is set to Standard Quality.
  • Click OK
  • DO NOT RUN IT YET

Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here.
  • Install ewido.
  • During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido
  • It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen
  • On the left side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start and let it update.
  • DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.

Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know how.

Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to in safe mode.

Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop

Run Cleanup:
  • Click on the "Cleanup" button and let it run.
  • Once its done, close the program.

Go to Control Panel - Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Restart back into Windows normally now.

Do a Panda Active Scan. Be sure to save the log it creates.

Come back here and post a new HijackThis log, as well as the logs from the Ewido and Panda scans.

Open HijackThis.
Click on Open Misc Tools Section
Make sure that both boxes beside "Generate StartupList Log" are checked:
  • List all minor sections(Full)
  • List Empty Sections(Complete)
Click Generate StartupList Log.
Click Yes at the prompt.
It will open a text file. Please copy the entire contents of that page and paste it here.

Come back here and post a new HijackThis log, the HijackThis start-up log and the logs from the Ewido and Panda scans please.
