    Hi there,

Please bear with me I'm not too good with computers! I was typing up an email earlier today when my computer randomly shut down which I though a little suspicious. I logged back onto Windows and there was a pop up from egis tec saying I'd installed the latest update, only i hadn't (knowingly) installed anything. I ran a scan with Norton 360 which picked up two trojan.byteverify and quarantined them. I thought I'd google it and it seems to be a pretty hard one to get rid of. To be on the safe side I followed the instructions on symantec/norton website which tell you to turn off system restore, update virus definitions and re scan. Nothing was picked up this time, so I have switched system restore back on.

I don't know if the egis tec thing is related or just coincidence that it came up, I checked on the internet and it seems they are an update for acer which is the make of my laptop.

The general consensus seems to be that the trojan.byteverify comes in through Java somehow, and it is recommended on a few sites that you delete the Java cache so i have done this too.

I just want to be absolutely sure it's gone and have come across loads of people using the hijackthis to identify problems. I'm not really familiar with this, but followed the instructions and have got a copy of the log, as below. The thing that's worried me is that when I tried to scan with HijackThis it came up with a message about the host files saying it couldn't check them and this could be because they are infected.

I'd be incredibly grateful of any help you can give,

    Thanks

    Hi again,

just did a virus scan today with norton and it found a trojan.gen, which once again was in the java cache. I'm a bit worried there's something lurking in the computer maybe letting other viruses in or something. Any help would be gratefully received!
