Earlier today after browsing around I noticed that my homepage had been set to an adware page. After resetting my homepage back the way I had it I learned it couldn't be changed; it reset back to the adware page everytime. I also noticed random pop-ups for the adware and decreased performance. I ran an online scan at the TrendMicro site. It found 46 counts of the sddrop.a worm and 2 counts of the muss.a trojan on my hard drive. After reading the descriptions of these two virus's on the Trend Micro site and running a Google search on each one, I eventually found myself downloading the Ad-aware program, as well as the SpybotSD program. Problem is, I couldn't quite figure out what to do with the Ad-aware program after it scanned. I thought I understood the Sybot program and worked it correctly, but after a second virus scan, I learned the same 48 virus's were still there. (I am however able to put my homepage back the way I originally had it now, the random popups and decreased performance still remain). Can anyone help me understand exaclty what it is I'm doing wrong with either of these programs, or more importantly, what I can do to get rid of these virus's? Any help anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have it all in a text file, so just skip the settings part of ad-aware. When ad-aware is done, select each item it finds and get rid of it.

    1. Download Ad-Aware 6.181 from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
    2. Install the program, open it check to make sure you have the latest reference file by clicking on webupdate. Make sure that your reference file reads 01R280 07.04.2004 (or higher number/date). If it does not, then click here and install the file manually.
    3. Make sure the following settings are turned to ON
-From the main window click on Start then Activate in-depth scan.
-Click on Use custom scanning options>Customize and make sure the following options are turned on:
      Scan within archives
      Scan active processes
      Scan registry
Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL
      Scan my host-files
    4. Click on Settings and make sure the following are enabled:
      Unload recognized processes during scanning
    5. Click on Cleaning engine and make sure that Let windows remove files in use at next reboot is on.
    6. Finally Click Proceed to save your settings.
    7. Click on Scan Now from the main window and select Use Custom Scanning options and click scan.
    8. When scan completes, remove all items, then run another scan but this time select the Perform Smart-System Scan option and then also remove all items it finds.

Also, Download HijackThis from here. Make a new folder for the program and then open it, click Scan. When it finishes scanning, do no remove anything but instead save the log and post it here.

It'll help us figure out your computer is fully cleaned of crap.

Download and run CWShredder from here. Before running the program, make sure that all windows besides CWShredder are closed. Open the program, and click on Fix Now and not Scan only.

    Then

    1. Download Spyboy S&D from this page
    2. Open and install the program then click here and follow the instructions for updating the program. Download all available updates.
    3. Run a scan by clicking on Spybot S&D and then clicking Search & Destroy and then Check for problems
    4. When scan completes, remove all items in red by making sure that they are checked and then click Fix selected problems

Then post another log and we'll start clearing out stuff manually.

Well everything appears fine. All the popups and adware seem to be gone and performance seems to be back to normal. If I encounter any more problems I'm sure I'll be back lol

Well, thanks so much for your help Nok1 and stillearning, I can't tell you how much I appreciate it.

Whoa, I'm glad you caught that (y)

    Current object: winupd.exe
    winupd.exe Infected: TrojanSpy.Win32.Small.r

All it gives besides that are statistics on the virus; no removal instructions or anything. So what should I do about it?

And while I'm at it, I have two more questions:

Since running the spyware programs last night and fixing the virus's, my pc freezes up from time to time. A ctrl/alt/delete brings up a white window telling me that I'm 'dangerously low on resources' and asking me to close a program. To the best of my recollection, this has never happened to me before. What gives?

Also since last night, I seem to have a problem remaining logged into message boards and email accounts. Prior to last night, I had everything set to remain perpetually logged in to the aforementioned accounts. Now, I have to log in everytime I visit the each individual site. I had all the 'stay logged in' boxes checked and haven't made any changes to my cookie settings (which I've always had set to medium using Windows ME). Now I realize having to log in isn't really that big of a problem; more of a nuisance really, but is there something I could've possilby done in using the spyware programs last night to have messed something up to cause this, and if so, is there any way I could change it back?

    Thanks! :)

have you run the Online virus-scan?

I see that you do not a have an antivirus program on your computer. I highly suggest you get one - a good free one which you can use use (and I suggest you download now) is AVG.

    Download AVG - http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

Install the above and run a full system scan. Then post a new HJT log and we'll get rid of the program if it's still not gone.

PS:The computer slowness you're having is probably due to that worm. We'll worry about that later if you don't mind.

I downloaded the AVG. It found three viruses and deleted two of them (it said one couldn't be moved....I forget what it said the name of the file was). Here's the new HijackThis log:
