I am using Windows Vista Home Premium(Service Pack 1) 64 bit operating system. Also using Windows Internet Explorer Version 8 on a laptop PC. My security software is Verizon Online Security. After Verizon does a scan I get the following message-"Verizon could not quarantine a detected virus". It shows "Trojan-Proxy.win32.fackemo.v" and ahows a file location as C:\Windows\Temp\TMP00000057895FBDD5A7BFDC7. Verizon cannot get rid of it and I have ran MalwareBytes Anti-Malware. No fix from either. Here is my HJT log.

Please run ESET Online Scanner

Note: You can use IE or FireFox for this scan. You need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus. If you need help with that look here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go ESET Online Scanner and click on the ESET Online Scanner button
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on Start
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on Start
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on Finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

Can you delete the file?
C:\Windows\Temp\TMP00000057895FBDD5A7BFDC7

If not try it again in safe mode.

Restart in Safe Mode.
  • To boot up in Safe mode, continuously tap the F8 key while starting your computer.
  • You should see a black screen displaying the Windows Advanced Menu Options.
  • Using your keyboard's arrow keys, select Safe mode, then hit Enter.

Open Windows Explorer. Go to Tools, Folder Options and click on the View tab. Make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files". Now click "Apply to all folders" Click "Apply" then "OK".

Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Restart in normal mode.

I removed the contents of the temp fldr although it did not contain the temp file that you referred to. Possibly the file was removed on one of the other scans? I ran the verizon security scan and it came up with no viruses. Let's hope everything is gone. I thank you so much for your help and expertise.

I'm not sure what the file was or where it came from, the file name was too vague. It could have been created by a trusted program but that does not sound like the case here.

You're welcome! Happy I could help you!

Please refer to my prior problem marked as solved as of 9/25/09. It appears after following all the directives and thinking that the virus was gone,it is still resident on my computer.Once again,Verizon identified the virus as TMP 00000050C85392FB293FBA4.
Each day that Verizon identifies the virus as a different temp file.As you can see from the prior post, the computer was started in safe mode and the contents of the windows temp file was deleted. It was also deleted from the recycle bin. What can I do next?

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

Thanks for all of your help! I got so frustrated by this problem that I just rolled the computer back to before I had gotten the virus. Since my laptop was < 3 weeks old, I didn't really lose anything. Problem solved. Thanks again.
