I use Avast 4.8 to check my system and try first a "move to virus chest" when I was notified I had a virus. When I "move the virus to the chest" it just keeps coming back as a new virus almost immediately wit the virus warning. Then I tried the "repair" option in Avast, but it always said an error has occured... File name was: C:\System Volume Information\ _restore{7F7BE6F8-0D6A-488B-ABD ... Note Malware name: Win32: Trojan-gen(other)... I ran HijackThis and here is the log....

Please walk me through as I'm a novice on this computer stuff,,, thanks in advance...

    Hiya

Are you still having this problem? If so, as you have an out of date version of HijackThis, do this for the latest version:

    • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
    • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
    • Click on Install.
    • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
    • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
    • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
    • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
    • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
    • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

    Regards

    eddie

      • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
    • Click Close to exit the program.

So, in your next reply, post the contents of the MBAM log, SAS log and a fresh HijackThis log :)

Not yet, as you have a rootkit showing in the list. If you use this computer for banking, etc, I advise not too, until its fully clean.

I just want to make sure its fully gone, so can you do the following:

Please download Rootkit Revealer (It should be part of the Top 10 Downloads list)
    • Unzip it to your desktop.
    • Open the rootkitrevealer folder and double-click rootkitrevealer.exe
    • Close ALL windows and programs and do nothing on the pc while the scan runs. This includes games, browser windows, email clients, etc.
    • Click the Scan button (bottom right)
    • It may take a while to scan (don't do anything while it's running)
    • When it's done, go up to File > Save. Choose to save it to your desktop.
    • Open rootkitrevealer.txt on your desktop and copy the entire contents and paste them here

It said it found three discrepancies... Let me know... thanks...

    That's okay, they're not malicious :)

Okay, just want to triple check everything is okay. Can you do the following:

Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
    • Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
    • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
    • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
    • Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
    • Click the Scanning Control tab.
    • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
      • Close browsers before scanning.
      • Scan for tracking cookies.
      • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
    • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
    • Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
    • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
    • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
    • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
    • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
    • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
    • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
    • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
    • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
      • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
      • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
      • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
      • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
    • Click Close to exit the program.

    --------------------

    • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here.
    • It is important that is saved to your desktop.
    • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
    • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
    • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)
