Symantec antivirus scans first started showing me that I had a trojan.vundo virus about a week ago, every time I started up the computer the quick scan would pop up but tell me that I had to reboot my computer to fix the virus. But every time I turned the computer on it would still be there. About five days ago I started getting numerous fake ads from internet explorer and then from Firefox. About three days ago my computer was slowed so much that if I opened something it would take about ten minutes for it to appear on the screen. I've tried running several computer scans including symantec and norton but I either delete the virus and its there the next time, or it says I can't delete it at all. I also downloaded the Trojan.vundo removal tool from Symantec that told me it couldn't find anything on my computer. Lately I have been restarting the computer in safe mode then running my scans because I have an easier time of deleting the viruses in safe mode and at least for a while I can get my computer running faster until inevitably they come back and the computer gets slower. The viruses have popped up in the scans as several different random nine letter names and a few days ago I started getting alerts when I turned on the computer that Microsoft Intellipoint has to shut down due to an error, when I click more information it said the problem was something called wahotake.dll which also showed up in the symantec scan as a trojan.vundo virus. I don't know if Microsoft Intellipoint is somehow infected or what is going on. I've tried several recommended procedures from the symantec website but I just can't figure out how to get rid of this virus. Here is the hijackthis.log :

    Hi,

    Please do the following:

Please download DDS from either of these links

    LINK 1
    LINK 2

and save it to your desktop.
    • Disable any script blocking protection
    • Double click dds.pif to run the tool.
    • When done, two DDS.txt's will open.
    • Save both reports to your desktop.
    ---------------------------------------------------
Please include the contents of the following in your next reply:

    DDS.txt
    Attach.txt.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
    • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
    • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
    • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.

Click the image to enlarge it
    • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
      • Sections
      • IAT/EAT
      • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
      • Show All (don't miss this one)
    • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
    • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
    • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply.

    **Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Below is the DDS.text file and I also attached the Attach.zip file as instructed by the download. I tried several times to do the Gmer rootkit scanner but all times the program froze or froze the computer but I will keep trying and post it. For now, here are just the two documents.

    Hi,

try checking the box beside "sections", then unchecking the box beside "files", that sometimes helps, make sure all your antivirus programs are disabled while you run it, plus close all other open windows, you could also try running it in safe mode as well.

Here is the rootkit scan results when I checked sections and unchecked files, I will try to run the scan in safe mode with files checked and sections unchecked, however, and post it later.

    That's fine, that's all I need,

    Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

    * IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
    • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

    • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

    • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
    Notes:
    1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
    2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

    Hi,

    Please do the following:

    Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
    • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- very important
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Run an on-line scan with Kaspersky

Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit Kaspersky On-line Scanner

    1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
    2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
    • Close any open programs
    • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
    3. Click Run at the Security prompt.
The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
    • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
    • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
    • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
    • Click View scan report at the bottom.

    • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

In your next reply please include
    • MBAM Log
    • Kaspersky report

Here are the results of the two scans. Also, I thought I should mention that probably since monday my computer hasn't shown any symantec scans indicating a virus, and I haven't gotten a fake internet ad which were almost constantly plaguing me last week. I haven't used this computer for anything other than running the requested scans from this thread and I didn't try to get rid of the virus any other way. Just thought it was odd, thought I would mention it.

sorry....I'm not following, what is it that you find odd?

The tools I have had you run are fixing the issues....

Most of the items found by Kaspersky are in your Symantec quarantine. Some of the items are in your Outlook email.

Unfortunately Kaspersky can't identify which emails are infected, so you will need to use your best judgment, delete any from anyone you don't know, or any with attachments such as videos or jokes, or old one's you don't need any more.

the other item in your back-up I would delete as well as it contains adware, which you don't want on your system:

    K:\Maxtor backup\FIONA-BDRM\C\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\My Documents\Downloads\Games\ElfBowling_BocceStyle_install.exe

Navigate to that file > right click and delete it.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 20 and save it to your desktop.
    • Scroll down to where it says JDK 6 Update 20 (JDK or JRE)
    • Click the Download JRE button to the right
    • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
    • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6u20 with JavaFX 1 License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE or Java(TM) 6) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u20-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
    • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
      • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
      • Next, click on the Delete Files button
      • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked

        • Applications and Applets
          Trace and Log Files
      • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
      • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
      • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Sorry that this took such a long response time, my internet modem broke and it took a few days to get a new one. Anyways, no I didn't mean anything specific by saying it was odd, I didn't realize some of the scans were fixing things so okay I am definitely on board now. I deleted everything as requested and here are the results of the DDS log. My computer is running great and nothing is popping up or slowing down. Hopefully this is the end of it, and if so, thank you so much for your efforts! you are a life saver!

    Hi,

Just some housekeeping to do now:

    Please do the following:

You can delete the DDS and GMER folders from your desktop.

    NEXT

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix

    • Make sure your security programs are totally disabled.
    • Click START then RUN
    • Now copy/paste Combofix /uninstall into the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the ..X and the /U, it needs to be there.

If there are any logs/tools remaining > right click and delete them.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

    • It is good security practice to change your passwords to all your online accounts on a fairly regular basis, this is especially true after an infection. Refer to this Microsoft article
Strong passwords: How to create and use them
Then consider a password keeper, to keep all your passwords safe.

    • Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
      http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

    • Make Internet Explorer more secure
      • Click Start > Run
      • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
      • Click on the Security tab
      • Click Reset all zones to default level
      • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
      • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
      • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

    • Download TFC to your desktop
      • Close any open windows.
      • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
      • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
      • Click the Start button to begin the process.
      • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
      • The program should not take long to finish it's job
      • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
      • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean
It's normal after running TFC cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

    • WOT, Web of Trust, warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. Protect your computer against online threats by using WOT as your front-line layer of protection when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:
      • Green to go

The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.
