using win98....irfanview....

-I get an e-mail with a photo......I right click on it and "save as"
-the pop-up window that appears shows destination directory (desktop)
-it also allows two file types to be saved-as (jpg or bmp)
-if left as default jpg,...it saves ok (seemingly) but when file on desktop is opened,...error says "unknown file format"
-if saved as bmp it is ok,and opens fine
-other jpg's are fine in Irfanview
-if I save as bmp, then open it ...and then save it as a jpg, it is ok.....?
-so...can't save as jpg DIRECTLY from an attached image in an email message

just recently started happening....?
...tried an Irfanview upgrade to newest version
...tried from two different email applications, same result

freaky, eh?
_____________________________________________________________
(updated info....tried same thing from web page and picture saved fine as jpg)
so....related to email program somehow?
- happens in both outlook and hotmail
could it be a security issue somehow? hhhmmmm?

While holding down the Shift key, right click on the .jpg file and select "Open with". select Explorer from the list of programs and put a check mark on the box labeled "Always use this program to open this type of files". Click Ok.

This is often caused by overloaded Temporary Internet files. I consider it a bug in IE, but M$ does not always have good warnings. When the Temporary files get too full, there is no warning, and some things just stop working right. One symptom is the inability to download images in any format except Bitmap, and it can mess up email, too. Try emptying the temp files (Tools>Internet Options - General tab, click the Delete buttons for Cookies and Files) and clear offline content also. See if that clears up the problem.

picture opens ok within e-mail message....when right- click-properties is checked, it shows as a valid jpg file. Then right-click-save-as-jpg is done and it appears to be saved, but it won't open...using any (open with...) imaging application. Cleared temp files and still no good. Strange that it only won't save jpg from within an email, but from a web page I can save a jpg fine?

It sure sounds like it is not getting saved as Jpg. What Email program and Browser are you using ? Have you tried 'open with' IE ? What happens if you display the image on the screen, then click Print Scrn, open IrfanView, and paste the image into IrfanView ? Can IrfanView save it as Jpg in that case ?

-won't open with IE or any other graphics program,if saved from either outlook or hotmail
- using win 98 and IE6 ...used to work ok doing this (as I maintain a website and get e-mailed photos to post all the time)
-tried to clear cache ( I clear it daily anyway)

Microsoft Knowledge base had 3 suggestions, but to no avail
-uncheck "do not save encrypted pages to disk" in IE tools/advanced
-be sure there is only one "period" in file name (example...file.picture.jpg)
-clear cache
I was able to open original message, hit "printscrn", and paste it into Irfanview, then "save-as" jpg...works fine

-tried disabling Zone Alarm and Norton to see if a security feature was preventing it, but still no good. I can work around this, but I hate when something that used to work fine starts messing up, you know?

I sure do know that feeling. About all I can suggest at this point that you re-post the problem in the "Digital Photography & Imaging" forum, and see if anyone there has an idea that helps. ---911
