I have two Vista computers and a XP computer. My internet is set up with a mobile broadband card. I also have a wireless network that allows all 3 computers to share files.
I used ICS to set up distribution of a single internet connection to all 3 computers with the broadband card plugged into one the Vista machines. This system worked fine until I had to unplug the gateway computer, take to another room and put it back together. (I have since brought the host computer back to its original location) I can still share files but can not get the internet to come up on the other two computers.
In order to fix the situation, I’ve already tried disabling ICS and then turning it back on with the sharing tab on the icon of the mobile broadband card. I checked and the other two computers are still set up to "obtain an IP address automatically" What do I need to do to troubleshoot this problem? (Probably something on the host Vista since the receiving PCs were not unplugged.) I should add that I have Norton Internet Security 2009 on all 3 computers. It created problems when I tried to set up the file sharing; however, the computers are still sharing files, so I don’t think that is the problem.

You should never bet against NIS's ability to cause you problems! You could go broke doing that. :)

Let's see for the "host" and one of the other PCs ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista type CMD in the Search box after Start)

    Type the following command:

    IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

The Vista client is the one that seems to have the internet access????

But it doesn't have ICS enabled either. Whichever has internet access needs to have ICS enabled on the connection that has internet access.

I am not sure what you mean by ICS enabled? The option ‘allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection is checked on the host Vista. Is there something else I should do to make it ICS enabled?
I connect to the internet with a mobile broadband card which can be plugged into any of the 3 computers. I set it up with the Vista computer as a host because it is not very convenient to have to keep replugging the device from one computer to another particularly when I’m working on a project which involves 2 or all 3 of the computers. When I got the config information last night, it was plugged into the Vista client machine. (mainly because the host Vista is a laptop which allows me to watch t.v. and still work on the computer.) Once I had connected to the tech site, I got the information from the host Vista and sent it to the client Vista by file sharing before putting it online.
At the time I didn’t think about the fact that this might confuse the issue.I’m going to resend the config information from the Host Vista.

I am not sure what you mean by ICS enabled? The option ‘allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection is checked on the host Vista.

That's what I mean, but for some reason it is not working, as evidenced by "IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No."

In Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services see if the Internet Connection Sharing service is Started. If it is not, see if you can get it started. I'm not sure of the exact name on Vista; on XP it's called "Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)."

I finally found Adminstrative Tools and the ICS option. According to the Services ICS is started and set to Automatic. I turned it off and then on again but it didn't change anything, Config still set to "IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No."
Unless you have some other suggestions, it looks like I'm either going to have to change the ICS to the Vista laptop or turn on Ghost on the host Vista and and see if I can get it to Recover my Computer.

I don't have any other suggestions.

My suspicion is that a non-Windows security application (especially firewall or anti-spyware) is somehow preventing ICS from being enabled.

    Hi!
I really appreciate your help. I contacted Norton and Microsoft for help and got a return emailfrom Norton. They suggested I turn off each the elements in Norton Internet Security (one at a time) and see if it made a difference in whether ICS would work. I don't have any other firewall or antispyware on the computer except Windows Defender (which came with the computer), so this might help. I haven't heard from Microsoft yet but I'm hoping they will have some kind of fix or tell me how I can access the Reinstallation system disc without having to reinstall the whole thing (if there is some wrong with the system) Your method of using IPCONFIG to check to use if ICS is working should help me do some tinkering.
    Thank you for your help,
    Valerie Detling

For Norton it will be quicker and better if you uninstall it and then run Symantic's Norton Removal Tool. Before uninstalling read the instructions on how to make sure you have your Product key.

Whether or not Norton is causing the problem you should be able to then reinstall it and be OK with it.
