I have been using VLC most of the time. I Got tired of trying to find CODECs every time
someone used a new video format. Somehow VLC can play just about anything and without a CODEC chase.

I don't follow the add files part.

A codec is a file format description that is coded in a specific way so it may be plugged into a program and give that program the ability to process that file type. For example, Divx, MPEG1, and MPG2 are video file types. Windows Movie Maker 2 uses the CODEC to import these file types.
