I purchased my Dell laptop 3 years ago and it worked fine until 6 months ago when it stopped recognizing cd's. It plays DVD's perfectly, but it won't play or burn cd's. My operating system is Windows XP and I havn't downloaded any new software recently. If you have any suggestions I would be very appreciative!:)

In all probability, your drive is dying.A dvd drive has two lasers, one for cd and the other for dvd.Perhaps the laser reading/writing cd has gone kaput. If that is the case, the other laser for dvd may follow suit shortly.
Even oyherwise also, depending upon usage, 3 years is a pretty reasonable life span for a dvd drive.Stsrt looking for another drive
