My mother is taking an online course at school, but is having trouble opening her assignments. She has my old computer, a P1 75mhz, with 16 mb RAM. It's running Win98 with Office 95.

When she clicks on the link from the teacher (It's a .doc file), Word starts up, but then says it can't open the file. when I click details on the error is says "WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in module MSWRD832.cnv at 0167:014cf6d5" ( I also tried to open the file using MSWorks and even wordpad and nothing would open it, it kept giving me errors)

there is also a few .ppt (powerpoint) files she needs to view, but she can't get into those either, powerpoint starts up then says the file is an invalid type. here's the funny part though, when I save it to the hard drive before opening it, then open powerpoint, then select open... I can see the first slide on the open file screen when I highlight the file. but when I select it to fully open, I get invalid file. it's damn weird. I figured myabe the teacher was posting corrupt files, but when I came home and tried to open the stuff on winXPpro/OfficeXP it opened up right away no problems. so what could be causing my mother not to be able to open the stuff?

95 is pretty old. The files aren't compatible. Open them for her and save then down using File-Save as to versions 95/7.0 or even to Word 6.0 and/or PowerPoint 4.0

later versions of office where not compatable with office 97 - I can remember when my company went frpm office 95 to office97 it caused tremendous problems and we had to install office97 readers to read these files.. so I'm afraid the advice from foley471 is all you can do other than, install a later version office97 etc or try and load the readers not sure where to find these or if they are still available on the web
