I have a true crypt volume where I have several files that I want to keep hid. When I do a backup using an image program such as acronis does that volume get backed up and then able to be restored if need be?

Yes. You can back up pretty much any type of partition with Acronis and restore it as needed. Acronis can also password-protect an image so that it can't be mounted or accessed, so it does not then need to be otherwise encrypted.
