... I only got so far and was foiled.

I read that you should have adaware on your PC and configured in such a way. I did so. I also already had spybot, and I downloaded the new CWS shredder. I rebooted in safe mode so I could run these programs, but I could only find spybot, so that's all I was able to run. I did run McAfee's program in safe mode though. I had also run adaware before rebooting in safe mode,

How did I do? Here's my Hijack This log. Thanks

first copy these files and zip them and send to [email protected] with a short note referring to this thread

C:\WINDOWS\system32\d3d32.exe

Run hijackthis, tick these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

Reboot into safe mode by following instructions here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406
then as some of the files or folders you need to delete may be hidden do this:
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

Delete these files

C:\WINDOWS\system32\d3d32.exe

then go to C:\Documents and Settings\USER NAME\Local Settings\Temp and select everything in that folder and delete it (repeat for every user name/account )

and select EVERYTHING in C:\windows\temp except temporary internet files, cookies and history folders and delete all that as well and everything in C:\temp

1) Open Control Panel
2) Click on Internet Options
3) On the General Tab, in the middle of the screen, click on Delete Files
4) You may also want to check the box "Delete all offline content"
5) Click on OK and wait for the hourglass icon to stop after it deletes the temporary internet files
6) You can now click on Delete Cookies and click OK to delete cookies that websites have placed on your hard drive

then
Reboot normally &

Download and unzip or install these programs/applications if you haven't already got them. If you have them, then make sure they are updated and configured as described

Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de
AdAware SE from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

and while you are at the adaware site download and install http://www.lavasoft.de/software/addons/vx2cleaner.shtml

and run it before the main adaware scan and follow it's directions

Run Sybot S&D

After installing, first press Online, press search for updates, then tick the updates it finds, then press download updates. Beside the download button is a little down pointed arrow, select one of the servers listed. If it doesn't work or you get an error message then try a different server

Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, press 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED.

then reboot &

Run ADAWARE

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
the current ref file should read at least SE1R14 22.10.2004 or a higher number/later date
Then ........
click the "Scan" button. and select full scan

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press next and then say yes to the prompt, do you want to remove all these entries. You can safely ignore any MRU entries though and not delete them

reboot again

Run an online antivirus check from at least one and preferably 2 of the following sites
http://security.symantec.com/default.asp?
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/
http://www3.ca.com/virusinfo/

http://www.freedom.net/viruscenter/onlineviruscheck.html
http://info.ahnlab.com/english/
http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/AntiVirusCntr.asp

reboot again

then post a new hijackthis log to check what is left

C:\WINDOWS\system32\d3d32.exe is known by most antiviruses & anti trojans as downloader agent EE and adawre finds it as apropos toolbar & search parasite

I am suprised that mcafee antivirus or antispyware didn't find it so you should submit it to them as well if you haven't deleted it yet

Now, on to the problems and results:

then go to C:\Documents and Settings\USER NAME\Local Settings\Temp and select everything in that folder and delete it (repeat for every user name/account )

Problem here -- when I log in in safe mode as administrator, I am denied access to the user names. "[User name] is not accessible -- access is denied"

When I logged in as an individual user, there was no such file! So I could not comply with this. What should I do?

then
Reboot normally &

Once I did this (I assume you mean reboot not in safe mode when you write reboot normally, and that's what I did), I started getting the following messages whenever I log on -- pop-up messages that come one right after the other and say:

first: notifyalert.exe common language runtime debugging services
application has generated an exception that could not be handled (etc.)

then: notifyalert.exe no debugger found
Registered JIT debugger is not available (etc)

Run an online antivirus check from at least one and preferably 2 of the following sites
http://security.symantec.com/default.asp?
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

I used these two. Symantec took six hours! It found: c:\documents and settings\larry\local settings\temp\all-fiiles9.exe is infected with trojan dropper

trendmicro found:

TROJ STILEN A in local settings\temp\update_1.exe
TROJ STILEN A in local settings\temp\5Wt7k6pF.exe
TROJ APROPO F in system\volume information\_restore{B37680B2-BAOA-4E5D and that's as much as I could display on the little pop-up box

I could not delete any of these, as they were all described as "uncleanable"

Thanks for getting me this far -- am I close to the end of the tunnel?

as you are having problems doing it in safe mode just reboot as normal then

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

then go to C:\Documents and Settings\larry\Local Settings\Temp and select everything in that folder and delete it (repeat for every user name/account )

and select EVERYTHING in C:\windows\temp except temporary internet files, cookies and history folders and delete all that as well and everything in C:\temp

then emppty recycle bin and then

Turn off system restore by following instructions here
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039
That will purge the restore folder and clear any malware that has been put in there. Then reboot & then re-enable sytem restore & create a new restore point.

go here http://forums.techguy.org/t208517/s.html for info on how to tighten your security settings and how to help prevent future attacks.

And from what I can find out the debugger problem is a common problem with the dell support application

Easy cure is go to add/remove programs in control panel and uninstall dell support( it never works anyway)

Thanks! I did all of this. Just one problem -- when I was in c:\documents and settings\larry\local settings\temp, I was able to delete all files -- except one. It was called

Perflib_Perfdata_SF4 and was shown as a DATA file with an Ultraedit-32 icon. It's still there. Do I need to do something about it?

When I tried to delete it, I got the message:

Cannot delete [file name]: It is being used by another person or program. Close and programs that might be using the file and try again.

No one else was logged on. No other program was running.

This is great -- thanks so much for the help. I'll definitely be donating.

you won't be able to delete that one easily

it's windows performance library log files and is conatantly being written to by windows so don't worry about it it's harmless
