my buddy sent me this message tonight and im waiting for him to get back to me im going to link him to here so you may be able
    to help him.

in the meantime does anyone think this is a definite disaster:

xp killed my new comp....i installed it...every thing worked for about 3 hours then it said windows XP has recevied a fatal error please restart the computer so win XP can fix this problem

then the machine restarted & got in to the loading screen then gave me a blue screen saying hard drive seems to be damaged or corrupted...please check it is properly connected & if the problem persists please contact technical support

Tell him to try pressing F10 or F8 (or some other key, depends on the brand) when booting up to get the boot menu. The "Last good configuration" might work, worth a try. He could also try booting in Safe mode, and running a System restore. Good luck.
