my friend has asked me to post a help request on his behalf
as he is unable to access the net since he installed xp
the problem being it does not automatically recongnise his
    modem.

the details he has given so far are sketchy
but here is what i know:
the modem is hsp 56k mr
which im sure is the hsp 56k micromdem (pc tel)
when installing the modem he has recieved the following
    error 692
    and error code28
does anyone here know what these are ?
and could anyone please tell me how he can get this modem
installed he seems to think that the modem is an onboard model
but i didnt think pctel did that kind

I had a lot of problems getting a modem to work with XP myself. The key is getting good XP drivers for it. Often you have to remove the modem, install the drivers, install the modem, and delete and recreate all Internet Connections. If you use a script to logon be patience as it takes a few seconds to run, it's not as fast as Windows 98.

could not get it to work no matter what he tried:

i am wondering he choose to upgrade from win9x
could there possibly be some kind of conflict created by the upgrade he has now reformated his hd but cant get xp to install
(did i mention he is not the luckiest comp user) as far as im aware
he would have to have an operating system in the pc as i dont think xp will run in dos to install. am i correct or way off base ?
if im wrong can you tell me how to install as my friend relies on his comp for any access with the outside world as he agraphobic

You can download from Microsoft a utility that will create 6 floppies that will allow you to install XP from MS-DOS.

    Or

Boot with a Windows 98 Start Up disk

Insert the Windows 98 CD into the CD reader

Run smartdrv.exe from the Win98 directory on the windows 98 CD (file caching)

Type cd.. to back up to the root directory

Insert Windows XP CD into the CD reader

Copy the i386 folder to C:\

Go into C:\i386 folder on C: and type winnt32.exe to launch the setup from the hard drive.
