I will be receiving a new Dell soon and have heard that the first thing to do is to reinstall the operating system to clean off unnecessary items.

I ordered DATASAFE to protect my data and McAfee and I'm not sure if reinstalling the OS (Windows XP Media Center) would remove those programs.

Any suggestions on how to handle a new Dell?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

IMHO, uninstalling a handfull of programs is quicker than reinstalling the OS and desired applications. You might want to try using the Add/Remove Software control panel to get rid of unnecessary items. I set up a few Dell desktops running XP Pro at the office a few months ago. I was able to remove AOL, Musicmatch and a bunch of other apps without any problem.
