I have a couple of older Dell laptops here of the Windows 98 vintage. They have more than ample hard disks and 64 megs of RAM. I'm thinking of turning them into NetBooks for a couple of 10- and 12-year-olds. The laptops both have good batteries USB ports and PCMCIA slots so wireless will be an easy task.

Here's the question: How practical a job is this and what OS would be best?

I know just a very little about NetBooks, mostly what I've learned by looking at them on the store shelves.

The term "netbook" applies to a class of ultra-portable computers. Old laptops with low specs don't fall into that category. Being ten years old, the batteries are certainly shot, so that rules out true portability. They also don't meet the system requirements for even the latest version of Adobe Flash Player. That will limit even web browsing functionality.

You can install a simple, low-resource version of Linux, but that doesn't turn an old laptop into a netbook.

Well, I would like to give them something; but, I don't want to trust a couple of $300 (+/-) NetBooks to such youngsters. So, what about getting on YouTube? I guess the Adobe Flash Player problem applies there also.

    Right?

    If so, I guess it's just a dead-end thought.

Oh, by the way, I was intending to use Linux.

The only way you'll find out if they'll work for what you want them to is to set one up and try it. Just don't advertise the product as a "netbook" because it isn't.
