These extensions add a progress loading bar:

    https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/pace4chrome/mnajikgodiohijkaknjomgpjjoogdfdj?hl=en
    https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/progress-bar/gkmdlnabefenjdefidpoepogehemkced?hl=en

I tried both and they're not working. After performing a Google search,
I can't find any listings about problems with these extensions.

There is one post at the Google Product Forums about a stuck Gmail
    progess bar:

    https://productforums.google.com/d/topic/chrome/E_Jy173W-NA

Whatever the problem is with the two extensions listed above, I need
    expert help.

Have you tried contacting the developers of each?

My home office Desktop was built by me. I can try any change to the
operating system in a virtual environment or run the entire system as
virtual. No changes are permanent until I'm certain everything is ok.

I installed the simple "progress-bar" first. Tried the usual quick fixes.
Close and open browser. Disable and enable extension.

    After installing pace4chrome, I disabled progress-bar.

Never thought about contacting the extension developers. If they replied
to my query (very doubtful) the solution might require hours of debugging.

All browsers should have a progress loading bar. That spinning icon in
    Chrome doesn't tell you much.
