I had AVG free edition and i was happy as pie for ages. Then my computer started to do weird things so i installed the trial of Bulldog and it unearthed 3 viruses that AVG had missed.

Now i am concerned as my internet connection keeps dropping. Could there be a virus which neither of the two have picked up? Should i download a third scanner?

Does anyone know what is the best scanner and does anyone know if this internet problem could be virus related?

To check for problems please do this

go to here and download 'Hijack This!' self installer. Save it to the desktop or other suitable place. DO NOT just press run from the website Double click on the file and it will install to C:\program files\hijackthis and create an entry in the start menu and an optional shortcut on desktop.
Click on the entry in start menu or on the desktop to run HijackThis
Click the "Scan" button, when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.
Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.
It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required,
so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

well you definitely have viruses there and personally I think bullguard is rubbish and if you want a proper antivirus I suggest to use Kaspersky or NOD
www.kasersky.com

www.nod32.com

now to the fix

Make sure you uninstall either AVG or bullguard fully as you can't have 2 running antiviruses on the computer at teh same time

Download pocket killbox from http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/killbox.exe & put it on the desktop where you can find it easily

Reboot into safe mode by following instructions here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406

Run hijackthis, put a tick in the box beside these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Windows DLL Services Configuration] winDSL.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [REGRUN] C:\DOCUME~1\Nathan\LOCALS~1\Temp\RarSFX0\4.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Windows DLL Services Configuration] winDSL.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Windows DLL Services Configuration] winDSL.exe
O16 - DPF: {15AD6789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} - http://static.windupdates.com/cab/Me.../bridge-c1.cab
O20 - Winlogon Notify: spoolsvc - spoolsvc.dll (file missing)

now Start killbox, go to options on the top bar and make sure remove directories is enabled and remove duplicates is UNCHECKED paste the first file listed below into the full pathname and file to delete box

The file name will appear in the window and if the file exists it will appear in blue under that window then select standard file kill, press the red X button, say yes to the prompt and once the file deleted message comes up then repeat for each file in turn

[Note: Killbox makes backups of all deleted files & folders in a folder called C:\!killbox ] If Killbox tells you any files are missing don't worry but make a note and let us know in your next reply

C:\DOCUME~1\Nathan\LOCALS~1\Temp\RarSFX0\4.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winDSL.exe

Then on killbox top bar press tools/delete temp files, in the pop up box in the NT section select temp & temp internet & cookies only and in the 9x section select c:\windows\temp & c:\temp then on the drop down user account box, select your account, then repeat for every user account on the computer

then reboot &

please go to http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/index.php?board=1.0 and upload these files so I can examine them and distribute them to antivirus companies.
Just press new topic, fill in the needed details and just give a link to your post here & then press the browse button and then navigate to & select the files on your computer, If there is more than 1 file then press the more attachments button for each extra file and browse and select etc and then when all the files are listed in the windows press send to upload the files ( do not post HJT logs there as they will not get dealt with)

Files to submit:

Anything inside the C:\!killbox folder which is where killbox should have made copies of all the files it deleted

the easy way is first go to c:\!killbox and select all the files inside it, rightclick and send to compressed folder, that will make a zipped copy of all the files and then upload the zipped copy

then post a new hijackthis log to check what is left

if they aren't there then the antivirus must have deleted them but left the registry entries behind, which is fairly common with several antiviruses

I'd just like to check for a few things though so
  • Download WinPFind
  • Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"
  • Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
  • Dont do anything with it yet!

Reboot into Safe Mode
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Doubleclick WinPFind.exe
  • Click "Start Scan"
  • It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!
  • Once the Scan is Complete
    • Reboot back to Normal Mode!
    • Go to the WinPFind folder
    • Locate WinPFind.txt
    • Place those results in the next post!

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

You have a lot of disabled start ups showing in the wpfind and lots of them are malware

hiding them doesn't cure the problems removing tehm properly does

go to start/run and type msconfig press ok and when msconfig opens select the start up tab and enable EVERYTHING on the start up tab and post a new full hijackthis log so we can check

then after you have posted the log do this

Please download WebRoot SpySweeper from HERE (It's a 2 week trial):
  • Click the Free Trial link under "Downloads/SpySweeper" to download the program.
  • Install it. Once the program is installed, it will open.
  • It will prompt you to update to the latest definitions, click Yes.
  • Once the definitions are installed, click Options on the left side.
  • Click the Sweep Options tab.
  • Under What to Sweep please put a check next to the following:

    • [*]Sweep Memory
      [*]Sweep Registry
      [*]Sweep Cookies
      [*]Sweep All User Accounts
      [*]Enable Direct Disk Sweeping
      [*]Sweep Contents of Compressed Files
      [*]Sweep for Rootkits
    • Please UNCHECK Do not Sweep System Restore Folder.
  • Click Sweep Now on the left side.
  • Click the Start button.
  • When it's done scanning, click the Next button.
  • Make sure everything has a check next to it, then click the Next button.
  • It will remove all of the items found.
  • Click Session Log in the upper right corner, copy everything in that window.
  • Click the Summary tab and click Finish.
  • Paste the contents of the session log you copied into your next reply.
Also post a new Hijack This log.

that looks like it got rid of a few unwanted ones

I would be suprised if this file still exists as all antiviruses should have found and deleted it but to be safe
Download pocket killbox from http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/killbox.exe & put it on the desktop where you can find it easily

Run hijackthis, put a tick in the box beside these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [spoolsvc] C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsvc.exe

now Start killbox, go to options on the top bar and make sure remove directories is enabled and remove duplicates is UNCHECKED paste the first file listed below into the full pathname and file to delete box

C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsvc.exe

Then on killbox top bar press tools/delete temp files, in the pop up box in the NT section select temp & temp internet & cookies only and in the 9x section select c:\windows\temp & c:\temp then on the drop down user account box, select your account, then repeat for every user account on the computer

then reboot & go to www.java.com and download and install the latest version of java as yours is quite out of date. the latest version should be 1.5.0.6

then when it is installed go to add/remove proigrams in control panel and UNINSTALL all previous versions of java and you should findd quite a few there
