I am not real big with Hijackthis logs but I would start with the basics. Does she have network connectivity and is she getting an IP address from her network connection.

start > run > cmd
ipconfig /all

Post those results back here.

She does have some stuff in her Hijack log that look really bad though.

I recently had this happen to me....right out of the blue. Went through all of the scans with my anti spyware and anti virus to find all was clean. Did a Hijack This scan and I KNOW what is in my computer.....saw nothing out of the ordinary. Checked my connections (dialup) and all was fine. Even checked my son's as he is on the same account...and he was up and running. So it was my machine.....not my server or phone lines.

My machine is a HP Pavilion 504 WinXP SP2 Home Edition, 2 gig Dialup to server, by the way.

Asked a tech friend (our webmaster) for any suggestions after telling him all I had done. He had to think it through abit but came up with this:

Bring up a page.
Go to "Tools"
Go to "Internet Options"
Go to "Connections"

Here you will see your default Server settings. Look below the box (showing whomever your server name is) where it says:
"Choose Settings if you need to configure a proxy server for a connection"

You will see 3 (three) choices.

First: "Never dial a connection"
Second: "Dial whenever a network connection is not present"
Third: "Always dial my default connection"

IF the First One has the "dot".....this is why you cannot access the Internet AND the Outlook Mail. Your internet access was "switched off".

Switch it to the Second choice. Click "Apply" Then "Ok" and click on your iexplorer icon to see if you can go online. If so, the Outlook mail will work to download any incoming email/sendout.

Unless you want your computer to access the internet immediately upon booting up, you can leave the third choice alone..... I normally close down and switch off when I am done. I do alot of offline work as it is and do not need to have my computer hooked up to the internet when I do not need to.

I asked my tech friend "why" or how this could have happened as I was online a few hours before without any problems. Did not go anywhere to get any "narsties" either...Nor anywhere to the last time I was online prior to that either. His reply was a "Microsoft Glitch".....it sometimes happens.

Something so simple like clicking a light switch "on" and "off". We are so used to expect the worst and go through more complicated instructions.

Well, it worked for me.

She uses broadband so i didn't think i needed to touch those settings?
The system in general is really lagging so i think there is something on there which shouldn't be!

I see you have Norton anti Virus program. Now, granted it is a good one but Norton anti virus program is a notorious computer process hog, by the way. It can make your computer slow down.

When I had it, my computer was lagging very badly and finally had to uninstall it. If you go through "Search" about Norton, you will find others saying the same thing. Now this was the Norton 2003 that came with my machine and I could not keep up the subscription. So I cannot say if yours is pulling as much as that one did. So, I will be conservative and not suggest you uninstall it for that reason alone. Having gone through my own bouts of fighting "narsties" in the past, better to be cautious.

However, since I did need an anti virus program, went to AVG Free. Made sure my firewall settings were up as well as keep my anti spyware programs updated (Ad Aware/Spybot)

I am unable to get Broadband where I am of any kind for the moment. (very rural area) My server does not offer it where I am either and cannot afford satellite. However, your machine operates on simple commands afterall. Why I offered the suggestion made to me and which worked.

Now IF it isnt your Norton lagging your machine AND your connection is just fine (or Still will not work after going through the steps outlined).....then it is something else that might have installed in your sister's machine at some point to give your machine a "headache".

But you might want to check those settings first.

Mike just wait for Cheeseball to come back and look at your new Hijackthis log. You still got some stuff that needs to be fixed there.

when is the last time they ran windows update on that computer. I see that Internet Explorer and Windows needs to be patched. Once you get this thing connected back to the internet run Windows Update. Just go straight to SP2 for XP.
