Unable to access workgroup templates with Office 97

Steps to point word and powerpoint to use templates:
--If not mapped to correct share -- then map
    --Open Word
    --Tools
    --Options
    --File Location
    --Select Workgroup templates
    --Modify
    --Select template share
    --Close
    --File
    --New
--Template folders in share should appear as tabs

I have noticed with Office 2k that when you select LAN share only the letter is show (ex. T:\)
With office 97 the share name shows (ex. \\cwsfs2\templates)

Error with Office 97 when going to File - New
Cannot open the template in the Workgroup Template location you selected.

Any ideas on how to fix

    Thanks

Do you have rights to that share?
To test, open the folder from Windows explorer, try to copy a file from that folder.

I believe that you'll find that 2K and 97 don't differ, but your drive mapping is what makes them differ, because mine both refer to letter-indicated drives.

Nope...my worgroup templates for 97 also use the UNC instead of the mapped letter. Mine has never had a problem opening them on network shares unless there was a connectivity problem. Maybe it's your drive mappings that are not connecting properly at logon

There are 4 folders with templates on the LAN -- inside of \\cwsfs2\templates

When I modify file location to \\cwsfs2\templates\deliverables -- I can see the templates in that folder. -- But the problem is there is 4 folders that need to be browsed.

I copied the folders with templates to my desktop in a folder called templates -- modified file location to C:\Documents and Settings\Bowman\Desktop\Templates -- I am now able to view all folders and templates within word.

I was thinking that it would only work with drive letter -- but I was able to view the one folder (\\cwsfs2\templates\deliverables) and I have a user with W95 and O97 who uses UNC and has no issues??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

I found the answer at the microsoft knowledge base site. It was baried deep.

The fix is to edit the registry
    \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Common\FileNew\SharedTemplates

Here you can add drive letter instead of UNC

    Thanks for the help anyways
