I am fixing a friends laptop that is running Windows Vista 64 bit Home Premium. The Laptop will not boot into Windows and it tries to self repair, but without any success. It say's there is a hard disk error - System 32/system/config/default.

His computer didn't come with a Vista reinstallation CD. This is my plan.

    1. to create a recovery Vista CD and try and repair.

    2. Back up all his Documents using a Bootable disk, then reinstall the operating system.

    3. Use the UBCD4Win and use registry restore(little unsure on how to do this).

Are these all viable options and is there something else I can try as well. Appreciate the feedback.

I'm not sure about the registry restore, but the remainder sounds OK. Maybe a different order ...

-Save data that hasn't already been saved.
-Run some kind of disk check/repair (I think the Vista Recovery CD and UBCD4Win both include this.
    -Try to repair.
-"Recover" using the Recovery Partition or disks (I assume this is what you meant by reinstall the operating system).

What is the exact wording of the error and when do you see it?

"System 32/system/config/default" is not a hard disk error.

Let me give you exactly what it say's:

    A hard disk problem
    system Disk = \Device\Harddisk

    Hive File
    : \System Root\System 32\config\Default

Tried to repair, but didn't work. The disk I tried wasn't the original, as they didn't send him that with the Laptop. Registry restore wizard in UBCD4win will not work as I think it's not compaitble with Vista. I think a Recovering is the only way. Any other ideas? Thanks

I am also having trouble backing up the data on the Laptop. I have tried the Bootable disk from Acronis and Terabyte Unlimited and neither of these complete's the back up. The Hard drive has 250GB of stuff on it. Does Norton's Ghost enable you to back up from their Bootable disk. I think they only allow you to recover from their Bootable disk. Any suggestions?

If the drive is damaged, most imaging apps will refuse to make images. You may be able to make a backup by using the "RAW" or "Sector-by-sector" option in Acronis or other and choosing the option to ignore bad clusters. The resulting backup will be the full size of your drive, however. It will be difficult to recover data from such a backup because it will have the same problems that the original drive did.

Try a full Linux Live-cd such as Puppy Linux or Ubuntu and a usb flash drive.
