I've been having some browser trouble that I can't figure out. After a while of being online, I suddenly am unable to browse websites.

Firefox 3.5 seems to get stuck in offline mode, and eventually just tells me it is unable to connect to the website. IE 7 gives a similar response.

The thing is that I can still use Windows Live Messenger, any downloads I am running are still working, and I don't get disconnected from any games online.

I've tried pinging various websites when it does lock up and I receive normal responses. I've tried updating my network drivers with no luck, and ran a few virus scans but haven't found anything. The only thing that fixes the problem is to reboot the computer.

I'm currently running Windows Vista Ultimate SP2.

Well, it sounds like some sort of malware.

Please post a HijackThis 2.00.2 Log here.

Nothing jumps out at me there.

Can you boot in Safe Mode with Networking and see if you have the same problem that way?

I booted into safe mode, browsed the internet for a couple of hours, downloaded a couple of files, and had no problem.

I am not certain about the actual cause or trigger of the issue though, so I don't know if it helps any.

Well, looking for an intermittent issue like this is sometimes difficult. I'd try MSCONFIG and disable groups of startup applications and services at a time, then use the system for long enough to verify the issue is gone, or until it happens again. Continue the process until you get to a configuration that works, then zero in on the offending process.

I currently have 5 startup items in msconfig.

IDT Audio, my on board sound utility.
An NVIDIA startup item from drivers I just installed today.
    Windows Live Messenger.
    ZoneAlarm Client.
    AVG Internet Security.

I've tried disabling ZoneAlarm when the problem pops up but it has no effect.

I had a similar issue with a Linux box it turned out to be my dns.

Does anyone more familiar with the windows side know if that could be the issue?

If he pings Internet locations by URL, DNS is working properly.

I'm gonna try disabling ZoneAlarm and use Windows Firewall instead.

The issue seems to happen after browsing multiple websites in a short period of time, or when I leave a torrent running.

It first happened with Blizzard's WoW downloader/installer, but since then I haven't downloaded from a torrent and the issue still occurs.

I read someplace else that it could be related to the Internet Connection Sharing service or Telephony service, but one is disabled on my computer and the other is set to manual.

If anyone has any other suggestions let me know... this issue is getting pretty irritating.
