I found the work-around Help and Support on Microsoft but that didn't help. We tried the first one, the second one I do not understand.

First off, is your friend connected to a broadband router, or does he have a firewall installed? If so, you need to port forward port 21 through the firewall(s) to allow FTP to connect.
