I am unable to run programs on an XP machine. These are install programs for new software or updates. I have prevented Norton from starting, and disabled all other security software I can.

Can you provide more detail?

Do the programs install successfully? If so, then what happens -- are there error messages?

When did the problem first begin?

And can you "install" and run HijackThis?

Download and install HijackThis using the "self extractor". Run it and select "do a system scan and save the log file". Then copy/paste the contents of the log to a reply

I attempt to start the program, computer starts but then nothing more. No install screen or anything else from the program, it just stops running. I have tried the same programs on another machine and they run and install fine.

Do you know what type of installer is being used, the Windows Installer or Installshield?

Also post a HijackThis scan, it doesn't use any such installer.

I cannot tell as after double clicking the programs, nothing appears, and the program goes no further.

But you say you have installed these programs on another computer. When you do so you will generally either see an interface for InstallShield, or the Windows Installer.

And if you want to rule out malware conflicts, post that scanlog.

If InstallShield, see this thread for a possible solution:

It also contains a link to an update for the Windows installer, if that is involved.
