Hello everyone. I'm new here and in need of some advice.

I recently ran a suspicious looking file on my computer. I scanned it with avast! first, as I always do with any new files, and it was clean. I ran the file and it did nothing, it was supposed to be installing a trial for a program. I waited about 30 seconds, since some apps take time to show you they're doing something. At that point, I opened up task manager, seen it's process and that it was doing something, and immediately ended it. I did that as I consider that to be suspicious activity.

Nothing seemed to happen and the process ended fine. I had my kitten in my lap and started playing with him when my computer suddenly restarted. To me that's an instant red-flag so I immediately hit F8 and booted in safe mode. I didn't even let it start up normally one time since it restarted itself. (I'm guessing the process re-started itself, or already began a different process)

Then I tried running avast! to do a scan in safe mode, it went a short way and stopped, the process ended. I checked the processes and none were suspicious, all normal. I tried re-running avast! and it wouldn't let me. So instead, I went into my computer, right-clicked C drive and told avast! to scan. It started scanning and only lasted a few seconds. After that, I tried it again and it would no longer let me. Not long later the screen went black but still said safe mode, and I was still able to open task manager and whatnot, but everything was gone. So I tried restarting and going back to safe mode and it is black now every time, I tried administrator account as well. Same problems.

I went on my other hard drive, and scanned the problem hard drive thoroughly with avast! No issues were found and there was a decently long list of files it couldn't scan it said.

I don't have a hijackthis log or anything like that, because, as I said, I never went back on that HDD after it restarted itself, and I had the chance in safe mode with everything gone.

This is basically where I'm at. Anyone know anything?
