Need help before doing a full system restore. For no apparent reason, my desktop has started freezing up. If I attempt to run any program that is process intense, such as a game or virus scan, the system freezes up. It will not respond to anything other than a forced reboot of the computer. Ctrl, Alt, and Delete have no effect on the system. There is also no specific place or file where the system freezes. All I can tell you is virus and spyware scans are not possible. They freeze up every time. Something I think might be interesting to note is the fans on the system. I am running four case fans, video card fan, power supply fan and processor fan (sounds like a testing tunnel at my desk). Every time the system freezes, the pitch of the fan noise changes, sounds as if the fans lose power to them. I tried to run AV in safe mode and still had the freeze up problem. I would love to post a HJT log, but it does not have a chance to finish before freezing up.? Since there was no warning of a virus, is it possible my processor is about to give up? I was able to pull off a CWS shredder scan. It came back as clean. I attempted another AV scan and open the Task manager to watch the CPU usage. It fluctuated between 5% all the way up to 100%. When the system froze up, the power meter was registering 100% CPU usage.

Does anyone else have any ideas?
Thanks,

Gary

Last night I was able to run a virus scan of my c: drive. When the AV moved over to the secondary drive, the system locked up. It seems odd that the system freezes on a different file everytime. I downloaded a registry cleaning tool and ran it. Many items were cleaned or removed, but this did not solve the problem. When I ran the registry scan a second time, the system locked down again. What is a good motherboard and CPU diagnostics program? I am scared one of these items is beginning to fail on me, based on the CPU usage while running a simple AV scan.

If I am barking up the wrong tree, please feel free to let me know.

Thanks

Gary

Well I was finally able to do a HiJack scan. Nothing looks out of the ordinary but I'll let someone else tell me yes or no.
