uninstall/install IE

My brother is having problems with his computer. He asked me to post this message for him, as follows:

week ago i errased some stuff of my puter(computer)with "evidence
erraser",this normally has never given me any problems.this last time it
seems to have messed up my internet explorer (IE).i cannot get a cookies
option to show up on custom level as to "enable"thus i cannot use chat rooms
etc.i also seem to have problems with my coloring on my puter..it shows back
drops as dotted blue specks and pictures look as if they are negatives
almost.ive spent many hours working with online support people and we seem
to have narrowed correcting this problem down to me being able to uninstall
and install EI.my next problem is im puter illiterate and i have not a clue
how to do this especially without screwing up microsoft outlooks 6 which i
understand is "intergrated" with IE(for lack of a better phrase)if anyone
can provide a puter illiterate with a step by step process uninstalling and
installing IE with microsoft outlook 6, it would be greatly appreciated...i
have windows 98, my processor is emachines thanks

I assume you mean Outlook Express 6.0 and not just plain Outlook. If so, OEX is a component of IE so uninstalling/reinstalling IE will also take care of OEX. To uninstall and then reinstall IE do this

Start>Settings>ControlPanel>Add/RemovePrograms. Double left click on "Microsoft Internet Explorer 6". A menu will appear, select "Restore Previous Windows Config". Follow the prompts ...

Once that's done, use IE and see if the problems fixed. If it is, either stay with that version of IE and OEX or do this to reinstall IE6 and OEX.

Start>Find>Files, key in ie6setup.exe and press enter. Once it's found, double left click on it to reinstall IE6 and OEX. If you can't locate it then just go back to the Windows Update Site and install IE6 from there.

Again, I am posting this for my brother: bryan i did all steps as you gave them to me thank you...i restored
previous windows configuration...this got my cookies back...i tried to use
chat ..it wouldnt allow me...so i reinstalled ei6/oex this (when i
checked)took my cookies option out of custom settings....i whent back and
"restored previus windows configuration"it gave me my cookies option
again...i went back into chat followed all prompts(thinking it could "now"be
something else)it still doesnt allow me to use chat.im confused...what
should i do?

I'm a little confused at this point. You said "the restore gave the cookies back but you still can't use chat ...".

What happens when you attempt to use chat? Do you get any error messages. If not, what does happen?

Without knowing the answers to that try these two things,

Click on Start>Find>Files, key in index.dat and press enter. Locate the one that's in the Cookies folder at c:\windows\cookies and right click on it. Select Properties. If you see the "Read Only" attribute selected, unselect it and click on Apply.

And it can't hurt to try this,

Restore back to the previous version again and then just to eliminate it as a problem, install the most recent release of MS Virtual Machine. Most chat rooms use Java based dialog screens and it could be related to your problem.

Go <a href=http://www.microsoft.com/java/vm/dl_vm40.htm> here </a>and download the most recent version of MS Virtual Machine. It's "Microsoft VM Build 3802 for Windows 95,98, ME, NT and XP" link at the bottom of the page. Once it's downloaded, run the .exe to install it. Once it's installed, try the chat rooms.

Let us know what happens.

Have you tried deleting the Temporary Internet Files and Cookies to see if that helps?

I don't have IE6 but I believe the options are here,

In IE click on Tools>InternetOptions. Then click on "Settings" and then "Delete Cookies". Then click on "DeleteFiles" to clear the Temporary Internet Files.

If that still does no good, use Windows Explorer and navigate to the Temp folder at c:\windows\temp.

Is it empty or is it full of alot of files?

hi bryan...when you say "delete cookies"are you saying that when i get to
settings, i click on "view files", temporary files pages comes up and click on
the some 54 seperate "cookies:def" icons and delete them all? a warning
window pops up if i'm to do this with an "ok" button..it warns i could damage
puter (something like that). when you say delete files are you saying click on
it in settings then click on ok? am i to put check in box that states "delete
all off line content"? notice:i clicked on "view objects"on settings..there
were some icons...2 of them listed were "msn chat control 3.0" and another
"msn chat control 4.0" (i thought this was interesting and maybe applicable
to my dillema. thanks, emmanuelgoldstein

Yes, click on "DeleteFiles" and then just click on OK.

Then go back to the "ViewFiles" screen and click on Edit>Select All. Now press the Delete key and delete all of them. You'll be fine. The cookies will be rebuilt as you revisit webpages. It's something that should really be done every so often because cookies can become corrupt.

Then if it still doesn't allow you to chat, goto the screen "ViewObjects" and post a list here of everything listed in the ViewObjects window. I want you to delete those MSN Chat Controls but I also want to see if there are any other objects associated with them. And don't worry about the effects of deleting them. When you visit the page that needs those controls, a dialog box will appear and you'll be prompted to allow the website to install them again. I just want to be sure we delete all of them associated with MSN Chat...
