Unknow Device --USB

Hello--I have a USB device that I occasionally plug into my computer running Windows XP (It's a Minidisc recorder) There are no mfgr supplied drivers and Windows just uses the generic USB driver. In the past it has worked absolutely flawlessly. Now, the computer sees the device (but lists it as an Unknown Device) under Hardware Manager, and when I check, I am told that there is no driver that exists for the device. Of course the device won't work. I tried hooking it up to my son's laptop and it immediately sees the device and it works just fine. Since I do my sound editing on my main computer, it would be nice to get it up and running again.

USB mass storage should be recognized with no drivers for ME/2K/XP. If not, try this little raindance.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.
