My computer is getting all types of odd messages..the latest being "Windows System Error - Unknown Hard Error". I was able to shut down the computer and restart it but I am concerned that perhaps my hard drive is going out. Or is this a virus??:(

If XP, boot from the CD and run chkdsk /r from the Recovery Console. See how many bad sectors it finds.

We have Window XP. The message is:
"Windows System Error: Unknown Hard Error"

That is it. No numbers, codes, nothing else.

If you have no XP CD, go to Start > Run, and type:

    chkdsk /r <Enter>

Choose "Y" when it asks if you want to check your drive on reboot and reboot.

Ok..I tried that but got this message:

"The type of the file system is NTFS. Cannot lock current drive".

I have disabled everythig I can think of so that programs aren't running. What am I doing wrong?

Messages that flash on blue screens quickly then dissapear before I can write them down. Things related to "bios". They stay up for maybe 3 or 4 seconds then they are gone. I can normally reboot (or rather shut down the power and restart) and the computer will function albeit somewhat sluggish. I get the errors mostly when I am online or reading emails. Sorry..I know that isnt' real specific but I haven't gotten a good solid error message to record other than the one I have mentioned.

After that message, you should be asked if you want to run chkdsk on reboot since repairs can't be made while XP is running. You need to answer "Y". Then reboot.
