Hi, I have a unexpected problem with my laptop and I wonder if you could somehow let me know what happened.
When I started the laptop it suddenly started repairing drive C. Nothing unusal happened before and it was running fine. I worry that whatever it was to make it have to repair C is something I should have had a warning about and if something is still wrong that needs attention.
Any light you could shed on this would be great. Thank you

This could happen for several reasons: improper system shutdown, cabling issues, problems with the hard disk, perhaps a malware issue.

This is a link for a tool by SleepyDude, that can help us read the scan's results. Save it on your Desktop, double click to run and then copy and paste the content of the text file here.

Hi, kittenkitten.

It seems that your hard disk has some corruption issues and it will fail, soon or later. I recommend you to back up your documents as soon as possible.

Then, just to be sure, make a hard disk check with the GSmartControl:

Download GSmartControl and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click gsmartcontrol-(version).exe to run the tool.
  • A list of hard drives will appear. Single-click each disk to see Drive Information and identify your drive
Note: most machines will only have one or two entries, but an easy way to identify your drive is by its size.
  • Double-click on the hard drive to see detailed Device Information
  • Click on the Attributes tab. Do you see any red or pink entries like the ones in the image below? Please list the names in your next reply if there are any.
  • Click on the Perform Tests tab
  • Select Extended Self-Test and click Execute
Note: this test can take several hours to run
  • Allow the test to complete. The results will be displayed at the bottom
  • Please post the scan results in your next reply

Thank you for the suggestion of the second download of Gsmart. Although I did download it, I may just hold off on installing it and see if the laptop gives us any more problems. Up to now it has been fine, this is the first problem we have had. Thank you for your expertise....

All I can say, is that corruptions were found. I can't say, however, that the disk will fail in a week, a month, a year or more.

We can try this quick commands if you don't want to "spend" hours on the GSmartControl now, to check the disk status and predict its failure:

1. Write cmd in the Search area.
2. Choose Run as administrator and Enter.
3. In the black window that will open, copy and paste this command: wmic diskdrive get status
4. Enter

What's the result under Status?

5. In the same black window, copy and paste this command and then Enter:
wmic /namespace:\\root\wmi path MSStorageDriver_FailurePredictStatus

What's the result under PredictFailur?

Hi, kittenkitten.

Yes, it is a good sign.

What I would recommend:

Back up your files regularly and continue using your computer, having in mind what happened and watching for any future issues.

Take care. :)
