I recently downloaded the Trial Version of AVG PRO and imagine my shock when it found a Trojan during a routine scan. The Trojan was called PSW.Bispy.A and .B. and for reasons I do not understand AVG did not "heal" or put this Trojan into a "vault". I went to various sites, including Symantec, trying to find information and hopefully a removal tool for this Trojan and I couldn't find any reference to this particular Trojan.
I also, subsequently, ran 5 different Trojan detectors from the Net and their scans all said I had NO Trojan. I am totally perplexed as to whether I really have a Trojan or not. Does this Trojan go by another name? Is it new and therefore not on the radar of most security programs?
I have windows ME operating system and IE 6 as my browser.

Download Spybot http://www.sherrylynn.us/privacypolicy.htm

Make sure to follow the instructions for updates prior to running the scan.

Click on "Search For updates" After the search has completed, the available Updates will be listed. Choose which Updates you would like to Download. Click "Download updates." The Updates will self install. The screen will change and the program will come back and be ready to use.

Sometimes the default Download Location will produce an Error. If that happens, look in the right panel. There you will find a small arrow next to the name of the current Download site. Click on it for a list of alternate sites. One of those should be able to retrieve the files you have selected.

Scan, click on fix problems then reboot.

Next:

Download AdAware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by clicking

on "Check for updates now", connect.

Click on Start, Use custom scanning options, Customize.

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"

"Scan within archives"
"Scan active processes"
"Scan registry"
"Deep scan registry"
"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL"
"Scan my host-file"

Click on Tweak,
Select scanning engine and click on "Unload recognized processes during scanning"
Select cleaning engine and click on "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

Then click "proceed" to save your settings.

Click on Next

Run the scan and fix everything.

Reboot.

Download Hijackthis.
Create a folder on your hard drive and save it there.
Unzip the file and extract it to the folder you have created.
Scan your machine, then click on Save Log.

Post a copy back here and someone will be happy to review it.

Don't make any changes until instructed to do so.

Hi Cybertech,
I have done the first part of what you asked me Re: Ad Ware and found a number of interesting Malware items which have been removed but I haven't done the "Hijack This" because I am a techno retard and don't know how to. The Malware that AdWare found didn't indicate anything that really identified it with the Trojan that I mentioned in my thread, however, I went to F-Secure and did a search on Trojans and found the sucker (I think). It is called "Spy Trojan PSW".
"A password stealing trojan is usually a standalone application that installs itself to system and sometimes drops a keylogging component. Such trojan stays active in Windows memory and starts keylogging (recording keystrokes) when a user is asked to input a login and a password."
The unfortunate thing is that F-Secure, although they have many virus/trojan removal tools, does not have one for this particular Trojan :(
The only thing that AdWare found in its' scan that was peculiar was something called "River software" which was in C:\restore\temp\a0010407.cpy.
Cybertech I really appreciate you taking the time to help me.....do you have anything further to add about the above?

Thanks Gerry....I had already done that as I know that with Windows ME you have to. I feel reasonabley confident that the Trojan has been removed but would like to find out from Cybertech if one can be absolutely certain of that without showing him the "Hijack This" log.
I also noticed with some interest that a fellow user of this site "Schaffer" has also picked up the same Trojan and am wondering it this is a relatively new threat that ppl should be warned about. I also went to Jason's Toolbox and followed the instructions to really tighten up my security.

Hijackthis is pretty easy, I walked a 68 year young, non computer user through it over the phone...I feel pretty certain you can do it.

Is the download the problem? Just click on the link and the download will start. When it asks you where to save it click on My Documents.

To run it open My Documents and double click on HijackThis.zip, now if you don't have winzip or another application that will open zip files you can get one from www.tucows.com or anyother freeware/shareware site.

Once you have the zip file open take HijackThis.exe out of the zip file (click and drag) to My Documents.

Double click on it to run it and then click on the "Scan" button, then click on "Save Log". Double click on the log it will open in notepad, then just copy and paste it back into a reply to this thread.

If you get stuck in the process just PM me, I'll help.

 Cybertech.....I am about 1 minute away from 1) tearing my hair out 2) having a major meltdown or 3) taking a baseball bat to my cpu.
Where shall I start? According to AVG Pro I still have Trojan PSW.Bispy.B but according to Norton Anti Virus I do NOT! AVG Pro (despite there ******* tech support not reponding to an e-mail I sent to them 2 weeks ago) has now posted on their home page, a removal tool for this particular Trojan.....only problem is the removal tool does not work. http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_remtext.php?id=bagbugnet
Cybertech I attempted to do what you requested with Hijack this and managed to get as far as saving the log but then the dummy genes kicked in because I was not able to open the notepad to copy/paste.
However, AVG says that the Trojan is located in this file "C:\Windows\System\bi1.exe:biprep.exe". Just to make things really interesting my comp which rarely makes a sound other than normal processing has now started making all kinds of outrageous sounds.
Cybertech save me from myself before I become completely bald!

Dont worry about it..........Do this:
go to http://www.lurkhere.com/~nicefiles/ , and download 'Hijack This!'.....
Unzip it to its own folder, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show other issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

If you have anything disabled by MSConfig or any other startup manager, please re-enable it before scanning to post.

;)

There.that was easy peasy:D

Go to http://computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html , and download the latest version of CWShredder by Merijn Bellekom, the creator of Hijack This.
Run it, press 'Fix', and allow it to fix all it finds.
And remember to click "Fix" (Not "Scan only")
After its done its thing hit the"How do i prevent reinfection" tab....
In particular pay attention to the patches for the operating system regarding the ByteVerify vulnerability which is how you got infected in the 1st place.

When it is finished restart your computer.

By the time you get back i will list the things to "fix" with HijackThis.

PSW.Bispy.A has gone but .B remains
