I discovered an iPhone 8 Plus (plus $8 and change) in a second hand sofa I acquired at the beginning of this year. No one ever called about it. It's been about 10 months now and I'd think the "owner" has given up on it. It's screen, activation, and I'll guess, iCloud locked(?) I cannot get into it to try to find who owned it!!! So, after all this time, it's now my baby. I'd love to be able to use it, but haven't a clue as to how to go about unlocking it and restoring it to full use. Looked at some on-line companies that "claim" they can do this, but I have to wonder about their validity? I sure don't have any idea what to do...I'm not familiar with iOS. I've checked this phones specs and it's a damn good one...be a damn shame to have to use it for a doorstop. So, I'd appreciate any advice/help I can get in order to restore this phone to it's full usage.

With out the owners information to unlock it you're SOL! It's just a cool paper wait now.

On a normal day, a reset from the phone requires the appleid as well as iTunes connected to the same account. There may be a (potential illegal) way but I don't know any.

As to using it as a phone, it would most likely be tied to the phone carrier and not portable to another carrier.

If you want to score good karma points, I would suggest contacting the phone service provider to see if they have any records of the serial number (located on the back usually.. in small letters) or at the least take it to the police department and they may be able to track the user. Maybe apple can too.

If the user was smart, they should have been able to use the locator, or at least locked the phone so it can be discovered once it has power... :)

Actually, I wonder if the phone number will show up in iTunes...

Good point. If the phone hasn't been reset yet....then there's a good chance. I got an 8 plus from a co-worker.....but he already tried to reset to factory and thus bricked it. With out the Apple ID and password.....Apple Inc will not touch it.

Do you have it plugged in (even if you think it might still have a charge)?

Have you tried (quoted from the manual) ...

Reset iPhone. Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

That is not a factory reset if I remember correctly. It's two reset the phone if its hung (like holding down power on PC for 10 seconds).

Your story may be true that you found a $500 iPhone in the cushions of a used sofa. It's likely the owner knows it's missing.

Take it to an Apple Store. Take it to your local police station.

Amy, I removed your opinion because it not appropriate here. It doesn't help, and could be taken as an insult.

Indeed the best course of action would be to take it to the police. Perhaps it was reported missing or even stolen. We don't assist in getting around restrictions such as passwords, PINs, etc. and that would include accessing a phone that you don't have the access code or password to.

Since there's nothing we can do I'm closing this thread.
