    Hey all,

I don't know how this happened, but I now have this default home page for some weird search portal which I don't know how to get rid of.

I can change to another page through tools->internet options then home page, but every time I restart the computer, it will go back to this default unwanted home page.

I have a feeling you need to change something in the registry, what I don't know - anyone have an idea out there or any other methods of getting rid of this.

I have tried using a few spyware detectors to no avail either.

Thanks - any comments very much appreciated :)

Please do this. Go here http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ and download Hijack This. Un Zip it and click on the Hijackthis.exe.

Click the "Scan" button when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.

Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

Do NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required. Someone here will be glad to advise you on what to fix.

Hi Sharky, thanks for the reply - this is what I got when I ran hijackthis:

I just wanted to point out this line as I think this is causing the problem (but again not sure) ->

This is the page that is unwanted as a homepage - so what to do now?

    Run CWshredder from
    http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip

then reboot then Download Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de

After installing, first press Online, and search for, put a check mark at, and install all updates.
Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, hit 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED.

    then reboot &
    download AdAware 6 181
Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".

    Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

    then......

click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

    then.........

go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ...........then........"Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it.

then post a new hijackthis log to check what is left

that will not work in this case, if it was that easy we wouldn't have several hundred posts daily deling with this and other browser hijacking problems.

take a few hours and read through many of the threads, in this and the security forum, you will learn a lot

read here about the problem with this parasitic infection
    http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html
and make sure you follow the advice about the security updates listed at the bottom of the page, in order to prevent re-infection

There are a couple of entries I don't like the look of, i can't find anything about them, do you know what they are?

    C:\Program Files\Sleepy\service.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdmTask] C:\Program Files\AdmTask\admtask.exe /m

and it looks like you are running kazaa which is a recipe for disaster with more spyware and viruses than fleas on a dog.

I would uninstall it, fix these 2 entries with Hijack this
    O1 - Hosts: 216.40.230.4 desktop.kazaa.com
    O1 - Hosts: 216.40.230.4 alpha.kazaa.com
    uninstall kaza with http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/kazaabegone.zip

a list of "safe" p2p programs is here
