    need :

When did the computer last work well? When did the problem begin? Sometimes the exact date is important.

What changed; a hardware or software installation or removal; an update to W7 [ check your W7 update history ] or update to your anti malware or other antimalware program / programs ]; an update to Java or an Adobe program for example?

Also, please provide the brand, model & model # of your Gateway.

control panel > upper right, left click view. Change to "large icons"
    Open "windows update"
On the left lieft click "view update history"
Right click the update with which you are having problems.
    Left click "view details"

    edit
using W7's Snipping Tool, or manually

    end edit

    Create a screen shot.
Return to this thread > "go advanced" > "manage attachments"
    browse
    upload
    close window
    submit reply.

    The details are important.
    :)

I will do some research. I've been sufficienlty fortunate to not have that situation, myself.

Be sure to backup your important data, as a general safety precaution.

You could download the update from:
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36248

RIGHT said update; left click "run as administrator"

When is the last time you ran system file checker?

When did you most recently run chkdsk /r ?

Do you use a registry cleaner? If so, when most recently?

I ran the Windows update troubleshooter, and seems like it fixed things ....but still cannot install update KB2757638

    Fix It Results Feb 21.png

I tried to download the update from
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl....aspx?id=36248

    but got the following message:
"The update is not applicable to your computer."

I use the registry cleaner usually once a week. I ran it this morning.

Also ran the system file checker today:

    Untitled2.png

After that I ran chkdsk.... "Windows has checked the file system and found no problems."

That may be the cause of your problems.

    Please see #2 at http://forums.techguy.org/windows-7/1090706-solved-registery-problems.html

I suggest that you begin copying your important information, now, to optical disks & flash drives, in the event that a re-format & re-install become necessary.
