I need a laptop for the summer and my cousin lent me his old laptop. It is pretty poor from what I can tell, here are the specs:

    OS: Windows 7 Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601)
    Model: Toshiba Satellite C655
    Processor:Intel(R) Pentium(R) CPU B960 @ 2.20GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.2GHz
    Memory: 4096MB RAM
    DirectX Version: DirectX 11

I think this laptop has viruses on it or something because it often has the BSOD and is erratic. My cousin just told me to save all the pictures and videos and then I can do whatever I want to the machine. So, I want to format it and put Windows 8.1 on it. Is this possible with this laptop?

you just gave the series number so without knowing the full model number it is tough to tell you if it will run 8.1. You can go to toshibas website, search in their drivers section and see if they have 8.1 drivers. If so, then you can run it, if not, then imo, do not install it.

you can also run windows upgrade assistant to see if your laptop is compatible. however, even if it says it is, unless you want to do some searching, there still could be driver issues if toshiba does not have the proper drivers available

it shows drivers available for win8.1 so I am willing to bet it will run. I will suggest that you save your money and wait a couple of months for win10 to be released if you are planning to eventually upgrade to it. Not sure if you will be able to but it would be worth waiting if you could.
