update laptop to windows XP

i got an old laptop from my son, but it only has windows 98 on it. can i use a disk of windows XP that came with my desktop to update it? i also want to connect to the internet, can i get a wireless router to do that?

Nope, for several reasons. One, it's against the EULA, one copy, one machine. Two, it's probably an OEM copy, and it won't function on a different brand. Three, if the laptop is running W98, there's a good chance that the drivers for specific on-board hardware do not exist for XP.

I suggest you stick with 98 on the machine.
