I'm pretty sure I need to update my RAM on my laptop but I don't know how to make sure I'm buying the right one that's compatible with my laptop. Any advice?

Your machine has the ability to have maximum of 16GB RAM. Your machine has 2 slots with 4GB already in there. My recommendation would to go to the full 16GB RAM, which you can do with a 2x 8GB kit or 2 separate 8GB modules if there is no kit. The type is a DDR3L-1600 SODIMM. You are looking about $90ish USD.

Having said that, this machine is 6 years old. You may not see a big improvement, but certainly a little bit, especially if you can fix the disk issue on your other post.
