Here is my updated TSG Report #4.

    http://mysite.verizon.net/pcredin/tsg/tsgrpt4.html

Those members who have read prior versions of this report will find the format, text, and tables very similar to what they have seen before. Those members who have not read this report will hopefully find it be self-interpreting and interesting. If anyone finds a typo or other error, please let me know. Thanks.

Very impressive Oscar. Thanks for taking the time to prepare these statistics. :)

I did notice a small typo regarding my total number of posts in the following report:

Table A1 - Ten Highest Average Daily Posting Rates

79,342 should be 70,342 as it is shown in the next report which should be accurate since I'm still in the 70 to 71k range.

    Thanks again! (y)

    very interesting work.

Your remark about declining postings after 2004 despite lots of new members joining, might be, that in the meantime, TSG had a lot of information already, therefore new members found an answer without having to post a question, what do you think?

It's a very good question -- I noticed that we also have a decreasing number of new members joining as well. Any thoughts on improving both? I've played with the idea of getting the newsletter up and running again, even if just to highlight interesting threads (as getting new content strictly for the newsletter is difficult to do on a reliable basis). I've found that the newsletter helps infrequent users to find us again and continue to post after their first thread has finished.

bp936: I think one thing going on here is that as we all get "smarter" and try to do more elaborate things with our computers -- and visit sites we know better not to visit -- the problems get more serious and therefore more difficult to answer and time consuming to work out. Many new members are desperate and have their backs to the wall trying to get help. When help is not forthcoming, they go somewhere else. Also, I agree that the TSG data base of solved issues is huge and if a member is willing to do some searching, an answer can usually be found. At least, that's what I do. If I just jumped in and asked a question whenever I had a computer problem, I'd "blow my cover" and my reputation! :) So I just search for an answer or live with the issue and suffer. As my wife keeps reminding me, I make a good martyr.

As far as attracting new members: I don't know what the competition is like. Before I joined this site, I checked out several others and then decided I'd throw in my lot with Mike. But that was a long time ago. I think the bottom line is with the helpers: knowledgeable, helpful, and numerous. Numerous may be difficult to achieve, what with so many asking for help, but many helpers are what is needed.

To what extent is "competition" the right word? I know that many of the malware helpers man the wards here and on many other sites, necessary for this site since it doesn't operate a malware school. I'm sure that some of the other helpers do so as well. Is there a competition for helpers and posts between the different sites? Obviously that is for the free ones.

to Oscar, yes it is getting more difficult to help or get help. There are tons more Malware daily, and too few helpers. Then, the new gadgets that people get and are connected to computers, unless one has that also, it is hard to help.

Mike, right now get ready for the baby, let's worry about members later. I always check on some other help sites the number of members, and I really think you have the best site, with a lot more members and post, than the others.

I can't find how to find information, if I have the same problem as someone else and have to search through many posts and then it turns out, that the problem was not solved. Is there a way to tag words about problems and the word: Solved, that would probably get more people to come back here.

You can always do fancier stuff with google searches, using something like the following if the inbuilt search wasn't going to be up to it.
    solved: Question Keywords site:forums.techguy.org

But I agree it would be convenient if the "HJT status" box or something similar in advanced search let you limit results to solved threads.

I guess Google is a way to look up, but I think Mike wanted to get ideas how to get people stay and come back. If we would have a way to do it instead of Google, it might help to get more members to join and post.
But thanks, I didn't know how I would ask Google to search something that long.

    oscar51 and Mike,

I came across this here from a google search.

    http://boardreader.com/fp/Tech_Support_Guy_Free_help_for_20776/Random_Discussion_315656.html

Not sure just how to bring up other pages like this but look at the info it has on this site and what other info in the flash box. The change the Grape but clicking below...Trendy Graph: day week month.
You got "Top Authors During Last Week:", "Forum Members:", "Latest active threads on Random Discussion::" and "Hot threads for last week on Random Discussion::"
    Then I got this link.
    http://boardreader.com/linkinfo/techguy.org
And this on me. http://boardreader.com/s/tech, hewee.html and =tech%2C+hewee]More graphs on tech, hewee ยป

You can add and update your site from the links it has at the bottom.
    A Search Plugin too.

So just all how you can bring up all the info I do not know because I found the one for here with my user name at google.
