Yes
Make sure windows 8 is fully uptodate with all the MS updates
Then you goto the App store and it should be available to update to 8.1
Usually when all the windows 8 updates have loaded you would be prompted to goto windows 8.1
You may want to make a recovery set of DVDs or a USB flash drive of windows 8 first - so if anything goes wrong you can get back
Its straight forward
Whats the make and model of the PC
you should be able to to goto control panel > in the search type recovery
you will see create a recovery drive
click on that and follow the wizzard

I realize that Window 8.1 has lots of improvements over Window 8, however, my HP laptop came with Windows 8 and runs so much better than with Windows 8.0 than with Windows 8.1. I have run it with Windows 8.1 (and have re-installed the OS twice and used Windows 8.1) but both times it was difficult to upgrade to the 8.1 and it would download and install the files but failed twice when it came to configuring it, the third time it would install but that took many, many hours each time. Then it would run pretty good for a few days and then started freezing up and I would have to cold boot it. Then I would open a few web sites and then return to the tiles desktop and it would be frozen up again.
Any major issues that you can think of with me just using it with Windows 8 and not upgrading to Windows 8.1 other than giving up a few features?

Okay, I'm going to install Windows 8.1 for the 3rd time. Hope things go better than the 1st two time. Will let you know how it turns out. Thanks for your help and links.
The upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 went smoothly. Will test it out for a few days and report back here and Mark Solved if everything is still working with the upgrade.
Little hard to tell for sure but I just seemed to get a better install this time of the Windows 8.1 upgrade.
