Hello,

I want to upgrade my computer so I can better play some of the newer games that are coming out.

Like in the title, I use a Gateway gt5676, and have added a new Corsair CX 500 watt powersupply and an Radeon HD 5770 1gb graphics card, and have 6gb of raam installed now.

I would like to know what would be the best processor possible to add to my computer that is also compatible without having to change anything else, as I believe that is the area which im having the most trouble with.

Thank you.

1. Welcome to Tech Support Guy

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you are wasting your money, spending it on that computer

3. You are talking about a machine of approx. 2007 vintage
The ram as you know is DDR2

4. The chipset is an AMD780G

5. You will never achieve the performance for NEWER games that are coming out
The processor socket is AM2+

6. The only difference between AM2+ and AM3 is basically the AM3 was introduced for DDR3 ram, but of course your motherboard is DDR2

7. My best advice is to NOT spend any more on that computer.
Even what you have spent now with the ram and the graphics and the PSU would have been better spent towards another computer, rather than trying to improve one of that vintage

Hey Macboatmaster,

Thanks for your input.

I know this computer is super old and outdated. I am saving up for for brand new computer all together, but it's going to be really expensive and take me maybe over 3-4 months if not more to save up for it.

I can play Overwatch at a decent framerate (Sometimes) by my standards, around 20 if I am lucky, but mostly under 12fps. I just feel like if I got an upgrade to my processor It would hold me over while I saved for the new computer.

I'm not trying to play The Witcher 3 at ultra settings or anything like that, i'm well aware of the limitations of the machine.

My question is, is there a compatible processor out there that will provide a decent performance increase for my computer.

I know I am being stubborn, and I appreciate your help with this. If you can't help me out I understand and I'll try to find another solution.

Thanks again!

When you reply please type in the box that appears when you open the topic, not by clicking reply on my post, as you can see that automatically quotes back all I have said

The point I am trying to explain to you is - the more you spend on this computer - the longer presumably it is going to be before you can progress to

please think how much it has cost for the card and the psu - that could have gone towards the new one.

I have attached the list of processors it is on the link I sent

However it is an uneconomic and will be a bad move.
The processor you choose may be a little quicker, but it does not work like that.
It is how quickly the info can be passed from the processor across the bus to the graphics.
You are limited to AM2+ socket processors. They are a dead animal

Please accept that it is never going to work better than what you have

I do appreciate you may not like the response, but it is the best advice

Hi Macboatmaster,

Alright, I guess I was just hoping against hope that there was an easy solution.

Thanks for your patience with this, I appreciate it. You've been very helpful.

As much as it pains me (as I am a very impatient guy), I'll take your advice and wait, upgrading to a new computer altogether, since as you explain, the socket on my board is what is holding me back.

Cheers.
