I will be looking for a book to guide me - I just wondered what you experts thought!

Depends on number of factors - Memory is easiest internal upgrade (Be sure of correct chip),
external upgrades are easier, as in any usb connection, simply connect device in win '98 and point to driver, in XP connect device and it automatically searches for driver.
Depends on circumstances, but Forum will advise on most possibilities.

Complete beginners post on this site and will be guided through the process.

The helpful things are to post whether you are thinking of upgrading an existing system, or building a new one.

What components you have/ wish to use and what operating system (windows version etc.) you will be using.

Fitting components (hardware)is generally straight forward if you follow the instructions, getting them to work properly (software issues) can be a bit more complicated but again many issues can be resolved by following instruction details that came with the components.
