Hey I was just wondering what the average upload and download rates of an average cable connection were. Do they vary much from company to company or does cable have a standard up/down rate?

The reason I ask is because I have a cable connection, and I get about 1200kbps down / 118 kbps up. Very rarely I'll hit 128kbps.

My dad has a cable connection from a different company, and he has about 3000kbps down / 480 kbps up. I've even seen his hit 640kbps up. He's paying no more than I am and we both have purchased what appear to be, on paper, similar quality connections.

Am I getting ripped off (i.e. the company is choking bandwidth to squeeze in more customers) or is my dad just lucky?

My Comcast account is 3000/256, and I routinely get 330-340kb/sec downloads for huge files, like the Linux ISO files. I think you're getting ripped if you're supposed to be getting the same bandwidth as your dad. :)

Thanks for the reply. I'm looking into switching my service now... I contacted some sales reps of local companies and they promise alot more than my current provider does. Thx for the info.
