On my computer I have the primary HD on one IDE channel, and a second HD plus CDRW on the second channel.

I tried to put a cdrom on the same channel as the primary. When
I restarted the computer everything seemed fine. I logged onto my user account, the desktop came up and then it made a continuous beep until I shut it down.

I cannot get it to start back up. I have tried disconnecting everything but the primary HD and still nothing. My monitor just says "Check the signal cable."

Please help, I don't know what to do.

I would say try to see if 1) your vid card is shot or 2) your processor is shot or 3) your Mboard is shot. I think it is a coincidence that this happened after you added a CDrom, but you may have also fried your power supply. The total wattage used may have been more than the power supply is rated for and... uhhh.. poof. try to check it, for high-end systems with a large HD (or two) and a DVDROM especially or a CDRW drive, it may be an issue. Try taking all but one DIMM of memory out and try putting in a basic 2D vid card to try to test it... if you dunt have one around... uhh yeah. The other idea is to try starting with no HD attached, that way, you could tell if it is a HD problem or if the problem is in the very basic hardware, i.e. motherboard, memory, BIOS, etc. Good luck.

I hooked up the primary HD, again, and it started up.

BUT, after about 8 minutes my computer beeps loudly until I shut it down.

sounds like an overheat alarm, you have probably knocked a wire leading to the fan or dislodged the cpu fan/cooler

    check them

I started it back up and the fan on the chipset and the cpu are spinning away. All the connections seem to be secure.

What is the normal operating temp for an AMD Athlon XP 1700+? I checked the settings for Overheat beep and it's set to 122. Is that normal?
