    Hello:

Happy New Year to everyone and many thanks for all your help in the past year!!

I'm starting off with a problem unfortunately.

Last night we came up with an Internet Explorer illegal operation and now consequently we are not able to do anything on the computer. In fact I am now logged on to my daughter's laptop and even thought our computer is not connected to the internet, we are still coming up with this error message.

I have just restarted our computer and it says:

    Explorer

X This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

Under the details section it says:

Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 0187:bffc06af.

I have attempted repair and it doesn't let me do it. It tells me to reinstall IE. I have tried that but it only installs it 1% and then locks up.

I have tried to restoring to a previous date, but it still comes up with the illegal operation message.

Unfortunately due to this I cannot even post a hijack this log.

Can someone please help me. I wouldn't even ask about this today, but my mother is ill in Florida and I need to access information that I have stored on my computer as well as general access to the internet.

    Many, many thanks,

    Always,

    empress 1

Try booting in safe mode, start the computer and keep tapping the F8 key until you see the boot menu and choose safe mode. Then follow the directions on this link,

Hi, Thanks but I'm still coming up with illegal operation and I'm not able to open any of the programs not even outlook. When I click on illegal operation it brings me to the restore my active desktop with a white screen. I click on that and my desktop comes back. If I click on Microsoft Outlook I come up with Explorer - this program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

    Help!

    Always,

    Hi,

One possible solution I came across was to rename the applog folder to applog2 and sometimes that'll fix the error. It's a hidden folder located inside C:\Windows. If you don't have the system configured to show hidden files and folders follow these instructions:

Open My Computer from the desktop.

Select the View menu and click Folder Options (maybe under Tools in MEi.

    Select the View Tab.

In the Hidden files section select Show all files.

    Click OK.

If it won't let you rename it try it in Safe Mode.

Hi, thanks but that did not seem to work either. Unfortunately, I cannot access the internet because of the illegal operation directive.

    Perhaps someone has another suggestion.

I would download HijackThis and move it via floppy or CD to the failing machine, install and run it.

Then, save the LOG file that it creates, and bring it back to this PC to post back here.

    Hi, WhitPhil:

You won't believe this but miraculously everything is up and running. So, I have no idea what I did except to follow the suggestions in the previous posts.

I would appreciate it if you could possibly have a look at the log. Perhaps it will reveal something that I should be very aware of.

    Here it is:

I have just one other thing to ask about this problem. Everything seems to be coming up, but now I notice for instance if I open a folder the icons are not directly next to the names. In other words a word icon is on the bottom of the page next to an empty space, but when I click on the title the proper document comes up. How can I arrange it so that the flying icon is next to the appropriate title.

    Again, many thanks,

Reboot and ensure that everything still works. The log shows a couple of "dangling" items related to an IE install. These will run as a result of the reboot.

    Then, post another log.
